This next picture is important becasue it shows how the Luftwaffe is still able to challenge Allies' control of the ocean. Germany may not be able to dominate ever again but this turn Axis were able to prevent complete control by Allies. the sea hexes made neutral are traced in blue.

The last picture shows how the Luftwaffe was able to obtain ground interdiction of 9 on two hexes. Impressive when considering rain and resources. And yes, many Axis planes were lost in this endeavor. They are circled in brown.

Turn 60 Preliminary

Post by kentkroeckel »

August 19, 1944.

Amphibious pool for Allies is 135. That is only one less for turn. Cargo ships have been increasing steadily so I will stop reporting on them. Suffice to say that the pool is above 2,000 and will not reduce for rest of game since replacements have increased.

European air: Rain.
Ground: Light mud. Water level 1-3.

Italian weather is perfect.

First picture is of ground losses during German phase. Allies lost 15,908 soldiers while Axis lost 2,210.

Final picture shows aircraft ready for operations during Allied phase. Naturally German aircraft would be low for this portion of turn. Allies are at 10,319, which is only three hundred less than total aircraft pool. Luftwaffe is at 2,189. However, total pool is 3,495. That is nearly 1,500 aircraft not ready. Allies number is highlighted in yellow and Luftwaffe is highlighted in blue.

Reconnaissance showing garrsion

Post by kentkroeckel »

August 19, 1944.

I wanted to show how France is being protected by Germany. There is a heavy garrison all through France. And since a second region has not been attacked, small garrisons are still required by Axis units. it totals near 200 combat value for the whole map still. This is deliberate by Allies for now too. Below is reconnaissance of garrisons.

North East France:

Next picture shows air combat. Totals before ground support are as follows: Germany, 589. Allies, 792. This is an advantage of 203 for Luftwaffe. But because of size, Luftwaffe aircraft pool is being consumed every month.

Two hexes were taken By Allies without battle and are circled in Green. One on D-Day and the other at second site. I think the reason a hex was left vacated on second site is because Germany wants Allies to spread out invasion force. To counter this, Allies did not conduct any attacks at second site.

One hex was taken by combat and occupied at D-Day landing. It is circled in red. Below is picture.

Victory Points: Turn, -21. Game total 87.

Weather is perfect on map.

Amphibious pool: 135. No change.

First picture shows D-Day landing site. Two hexes have been vacated by Germany and are circled in green. Allies had expected this to happen.

On second landing site of France Axis forces took final invasion hex. Three Allied units are now isolated; circled in pink.

This next picture I am inserting after releasing post because Metalist was so kind in taking a snapshot of Axis attack on second French invasion site and sending it to me. Two attacks were conducted on this hex and he informed me that the first attack on this hex killed about 4,000 soldiers on both sides. The battle mode locator did not show other. The second Axis attack resulted in a route of an American armor division and retreat to two other American units. Below is picture. The hex in question is just east / right of pink hex.

Just finished ground operations and additions are: 23 for Axis while allies lost 32 more. Easy way to say that Luftwaffe lost around 6oo while Allies near 900.

Two hexes were withdrawn by Germany on D-Day area and are circled in green. Two hexes were taken by combat by Allies and were occupied. They are in red. There is one hex that is circled in airborne pink. One American infantry division was airlifted back to England. The two other units could not be transported due to heavy equipment. Since isolated, they were not able to remove their heavy support units.

Weather is perfect on map.

Amphibious pool: 136. Plus one.

Victory Points: Turn -36. Game total is 51. Soon going to be at zero.

Forgot to get a chart but air losses for Germany phase are as follows: Axis 134 and Allies 54.

Germany has one hex which is at 8 interdiction on French D-Day landing site. Below is picture.

Turn 63 German Phase

Germany did one attack this turn and fortunately, at least the first attack gets recorded by Allies' BLM; Battle Locator Mode. I am talking about ground combat conducted by Axis. Below are results. The hex taken by Germany is circled in brown. Axis have also vacated a hex on the D-Day region, circled in Green.

Weather is good for whole map but rain is coming next week.

Victory Points. For turn were -25 and game total is 26. Next turn starts the fall into negative numbers. At negative three hundred game becomes a minor victory for Germany. the challenge will get there. Next level is at minus one thousand but no chance for that. Game should settle near negative five hundred.

Turn 64 Allied phase

Amphibious pool: It has lost a few in rainy weather due to unit movement. That gives a clue. Some major changes are occurring. Amount is 139. Still a consistent small number.

This turn stretched into many days due to outside commitments so I forgot to record the air war numbers. Oops. I do recall that Germany lost around three hundred and Allies around 700 though.

I also think maybe somebody in WitW administration took a look at the challenge and corrected the BLM (Battle Locator Mode). We have records again.

No hexes were taken in D-Day region despite a couple near victories. Weather and changing of air missions did hamper results. This also made the turn take several days to complete, doing a few hours a day. Hexes attacked are highlighted in yellow.

Screenshot 2026-01-18 220459.jpg (126.07 KiB) Viewed 146 times

Air interdiction is low for Allies over the D-Day area too, due to weather and air mission changes. Many squadrons were deleted to consolidate logistics and make for strong air wings. This by the way, does not cost an administration point.

Following picture shows Italian front. Two hexes were taken by combat and are circled in red. Six other hexes were attacked and the whole German line is looking to be weakened. There are only a few hex rows to take in Southern Italy. Unfortunately, this still leaves Northern Italy. Another year of hell for the Allies. Ha.

Final thought: Allies are attacking much right now. One could sit back and protect victory points to ensure a neutral victory, (Draw). However, that gets away from a realistic game and would make the challenge boring.

I am playing the Allied side as I think the Allies would be conducting themselves historically. Of course strategic bombing is a game function that must be maintained or else game play would be manipulated by Allies. So though I am not worrying about victory points, I need to maintain a healthy strategic bombing campaign. The Expanded Allied Air Headquarters scenario is designed around this.

If Metalist and I were playing with normal air function I believe he would be having the Germans kicking the Allies off France. Even now Allies are finding it difficult to move off of D-Day region.

This was still a difficult air phase due to air units changing. Several British fighter bomber squadrons were deleted and I found three air wings that had gotten lost in the shuffling. Below is the air results. Allied air interdiction in D-Day region is not good due to things be moved and the weather but it was nessecary. Below is picture.

Flak

Post by kentkroeckel »

Anti aircraft (Flak) is important in WitW. Germany in particular needs to utilize in for an effective defense. On turn 65 the highest category of Allied losses were due to Anti aircraft (AA).

German rail AA can be moved without cost as long as there is one administrative point left to use. As many as you wish may be moved so each main city should have them. Metalist has done this well.

Another type is tower and as its name implies, stationary concrete flak towers. No movement.

Final type is what one thinks of as normal. It can be assigned to units, fortifications and cities. It costs administrative points to be placed on cities but is good defense against aircraft. Metalist has placed many on active air bases that have cities as well. No easy tactical bombing for Allies.

Allies have an abundance of Flak but has limitations in using it too. Of course units get some but in order to get a town assigned one it has to have rail connecting it. this is why it is so important for Allies to repair rail. This can be done by RR units as well as construction engineers. Make sure they are assigned to a HQ that is near the front and active.

Example: All towns in D-Day landing have rail repaired when possible. They also get a depot and air base. These things work together. Logistics is helped, air missions can start near front, and AA can protect front. Protection of town and possible one hex away.
