Ship Refits

Post by Dereck »

I'm just wondering how people do it.

I am only in mid-May 1942 and am woefully falling behind. I have 40 ships currently refitting and 84 to currently refit and more will come due when June arrives.

How do you schedule their refitting? And what criteria do you use to decide whether to do the refit at a forward port (i.e., Pearl Harbor) versus sending back to the West Coast?

Thanks

Find combat ships with earliest refit dates and park them in shakedown TFs in a port. Good example are several USN DDs in PH which refit in 1/1942. Group them in one shakedown TF in PH hex and refit them en masse in PH once 1/1942 starts.

If you want to turn the Wickes DDs into APDs, you have to do the February 1942 refit before doing any other refits. If any other refit is done, then they can't be converted into APDs.

Wait until the ships are at a decent and safe port while also needing repairs, at least for the CAs, CLs, and DDs. For the CVs and their escorts, it depends upon the war situation. Sometimes I let a refit or two go past before I do refit. It also depends upon how long the refit takes and any shipyard requirements.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

IIRC that refit gives them radar but no improvement in ASW weapons. Still worth doing for the improved likelihood of spotting a sub before it attacks.

For me it also depends on what the refit gives them. Refits that only exchange .50 cal MGs for 20mm guns might not be worth the time if the ship is not going to be sent into the danger zone, and might be needed to defend home port area. The 4/42 Yorktown class CV refit is an example of that.

June 44 & I have over 50 subs due an upgrade, but I would rather let them sink ships, and only refit them they are damaged & have to return to port
