Weird Message using U-2 planes for Air dropped Supplies

Post by Wiedrock »

How to reproduce:
take any T2 of GC41 and try to air drop supplies into Kherson using the U-2 planes (you need to move a CU there before).

U-2 transports can only drop freight at airfields.

Likely something to do with their low transport capacity and another case of the wrong error message being displayed. I ran a test with the U2s and Li-2 group transporting to a unit, and although it said they sent the U2s, none were lost and no miles were flown (but they do transport to airbases). So yes, they only appear to be able to transport to airfields. There are only 2 U2 transport units in the game. We mostly left them out since their primary roles in the partisan war and as liaison aircraft is not needed in the game.

I know its been debated elsewhere but can't find it, so I put it here since this issue is the main immersion issue (besides the planes likely being too few and especially several Transport AGs missing, which leads with the reduced AG sizes to a rather weird situation).

It is not allowed for those small bi-planes to make flights to hexes without an airfield, but several times I came across notes on those small airplanes being actually used exacly for those cases when there was no proper landing possible/no airfield at all.
So if anything they should be able to land everywhere and drop supplies without an negative "airdrop modifier" ...but maybe with some %-ages more OPS.
At War's Summit, Chapter 'Logiatics' wrote: [context: it's a book about the battle in the High Caucasus in late 1942 and frequently mentions planes being an important means of Soviet supplies, which worked as it should have while ground logistocs often failed for varying reasons]

"The Soviets divisions had no cable-car equipment, but airlifts partially compensated for the flaws of Soviet ground logistics. A large fleet of small biplanes able to land at short airstrips delivered up to 60 tonnes of supply daily, weather permitting - an amount equal to the dayly needs of the two German mountain divisions. In total, during the actions on the MCR [Main Caucasus Ridge], the Red Air Force brought 4,088 tonnes of cargo to divisions fighting on the ridge and evacuated about 5,600 wounded soldiers.
With the airlift, the Soviets delivered larger cargo volumes to the MCR than the Germans did, but [...] Headquarters [...] misjudged the supply priorities."

A Soviet airlift. The large fleet of Po-2 biplanes able to land on short airstrips was a vital asset of Soviet logistics.

Update on the original issue. The original issue was fixed, message issue remains when dropping on a friendly unit in open terrain.

Not sure about the exact time period of the 4088 tonnes (metric) delivered in the quote I posted above, but these figures are not even remotely achieveable with the 2 AGs available.
If we assume July (mostly incuding it, the actual operations only started at the end of July) until end of Deccember it is 6 Months which means about 26weeks.
This means 4088tonnes/26weeks=157tonnes/week on average.
In game a ton of freight is 2000lb so I think we can save conversion efforts.

In game you get when only flying 2Hexes ~80 tonnes a week, so about 50% of what was delivered with the lowest distance that would make any sense and in good weather.
For the daylie max figures it is (80/7)/60=0.19→~20% daylie of what could be delivered at max.

Not sure how many actual transport AGs originally were in the region, possible they also used other AGs with such planes, which in game can not be used since they are TacBs/Recons and not LBs.
