Thanks asl3d for clarifying that. Interesting that they got members from every state.

That next scenario sounds very familiar - the battle for Carpiquet airport. I read Kurt Meyer's incredible Stackpole book and he included the Normandy fighting and the story of his Panzer IVs waiting for the order to attack when he was in the Abbey tower. A bit odd that the German player has to exit the map to win cause it was a defensive spoiling attack to hold the Canadians at the airport. But it should be a good battle and nostalgic.

You're right.

I think the scenario is trying to simulate the possibility that German tanks had a chance of breaking through the still-held Allied front.

The German SS division had enough firepower to cause problems...

That aftermath sounds like a good movie. They should make a movie out of the Normandy battles between the 12th SS and the Canadians. It was fortunate the Canadians couldn't get artillery support. I remember it was a hard battle for both sides. Then Canadians were tenacious and aggressive while the German teenagers were professional and good at teamwork.

Yes, I agree there's more than enough material to make a good film. Especially since there's been so much talk about the battles of Normandy between the 12th SS and the Canadians.

About 2,000 personnel were transferred from the LSSAH and in September 1943, the division 12th SS had over 16,000 recruits on its roster, undergoing training in Beverloo Camp in Leopoldsburg, Belgium. In March 1944 the 12th SS was attached to the I SS Panzer Corps and transferred to Caen in Normandy. At the beginning of June, the division had over 150 tanks.
On 6 June 1944, the division, along with the 21st Panzer Division, were the closest Panzer divisions to the landing beaches. The first units of the 12th SS reached their assembly area near Evrecy at 22:00 hours on 6 June but the Panther battalion ran out of fuel east of the Orne River. On 7 June, the 25th SS Panzergrenadier Regiment, along with 50 Panzer IV tanks of the 12th SS Panzer Regiment, arrived and moved into position north-west of Caen......

That's a good summary. In the Kurt Meyer book, he emphasizes how badly they 12th SS were shot up by the allies air forces while on route to Normandy and while they were there. They were pounded by both air and horrendous naval gunfire because Hitler would not agree to let them pull back inland to avoid the dreadful big shells. So I think anyone learning about these battles should know how badly depleted the new 12th SS division was just in traveling to the front. They requested Rommel many times to send AA guns to defend but there were none to spare so it just exasperated Rommel. Your story matches the book about the 50 Panzer IV tanks used in that early battle from the Abbey.

Your new battle for Vierville sounds very fun with a tug-of-war style battle for the town. Seems like every time the allied firepower won these battles because of their massive arty, air and naval support. I wish the Germans had matching support to even the odds for a fair battle.

It is certainly true that the Allied air and naval superiority was a great help to the Allied troops who had just landed on the beaches of Normandy. However, in all the Overlord scenarios, I try to balance the forces involved so that there is a "reasonable" chance for the attacking side to win the scenario, although this is not always easy to achieve...
