Turn 5 Start

North

Germans focus their attacks towards east, cross river in Vielkie Luki area but haven't made any significant gains.
Good news, as terrain favours defenders here, troops are numerous and easily to reinforce due to proximity to Moscow.

No important developments in Smolensk area, however presence of German infantry will make significant difference next turn and I expect much stronger attacks.

In the south, Dnepr was crossed, but I have not problem with this development as it weakens main push towards Moscow.

Kiev has proven to be objective of Jawi's attack. I am happy with this outcome, and haveing 4 div encircled is not a problem for me.

Velkie Luki area was further reinforced, I am content with strenght of my defences. More German attacks here would be welcomed.

Not so great here. Defences south west of Smolenks look breachable, but without support of Panzers that are operating further north avoiding big encirclement is highly probable.

Further to the south I am intending to buy one more turn before abandoning Dnepr river and reatreating east.

Kiev defence is deliberatelly weak to lure Germans into attacking the city, so I can slowly retreat east waiting for line to be strenghtened by steasy arrivals of reinforcements.

Turn 6 Start

Small German advance in Velie Luki region and encicrlement of my troops north of Vitebks. Small price for 1 more turn relativelly stable defences.
In the grand scheme of things situation here is very good.

Defensive postiton at the river Dnepr are lost so only option is shfit east towards swamps near Sozh river.

Successfull attach on Motorised Brigade east of Vitebsk and its favourable retreat made it possible for me to establish connection to encircled units.
Bis success that will significantly slow German advance in that area.

I am really happy with strenght of my defences here.

I expect forces concentrated south of Smolensk and in Gomel area to withstand first wave of Axis attack (without infantry support), front line inbetween is however paper thin and any meaninfull German push will break it.

Deblocking 4 encircled divisions Kiev proven to be impossible.

Taking advantage of existing forts and line of swamps to the east (affecting potential encicrlement) I have decided to defend Kiev area for one more turn.
Further to the south I was less bold and retreated to next defensive position.

nach kurzen intensiven kämpfen ist kiev nun in fester deutscher hand.

es soll eine neue panzergruppe aufgestellt werden,
um die beginnenden gefechte um smolensk zu unterstützen.

Small advances in Velkie Luki area. Panzer didn't conduct significant operation, so this is defeinitelly good turn in the north.

I feel secure in that part of the front.
Panzers are already moving south and strenght of first and second line is suffience enough to prevent meaningfull penetration.

Best units were concentrated south of Smolensk to defend and slow down advance along the most favourable lines.
If he shifs south and attack weaker positions there I will be happy with such outcome as it will take him away from main targets.

In the south Gomel should hold for 1 more turn.

It is first time I played so many turns as Soviet so it took me a bit by surprise that reiforcements are that low during summer. I was defeinitelly more confident than I should have.

Due to low troop density on flanks I decided to withdraw east to be just outside of reach of German infantry.

All quiet on the Northern front. Units are well entrenched and of reasonable quality so sudden German shift north won't lead to sudden colapse of defences.

Due to lack of German acitivity and good entrenchment level, excess of troops was moved south to reinforce defences in Smolensk area.

Reserve front and norther part of Western are composed of large number of strong units. Clear terrain south of Smolensk is flanked by swamps so I am content with situation here.

Further down, in Chernigov region I expect much less favourable developments, but panzers are not numerous enough to significantly exploit potential inital German success.

Central part of southern part of the front is composed of units that are strong enough to contain German push enough to prevent significant encirclement.
However, both flanks are weak what forces me to retreat far further than I would have liked and abandon great defensive positions east of Kiev.

Main obejctive in the north is to appear strong while shifting troops towards Smolensk.
So far it works, particularyli in Leningrad direction.

Quality units were rushed to plug the gap east of Smolensk. I expect line to withstand at least 1 more turn of intensive assults.

Furter in the south objective is to harras and reatreat slowly using abundand swaps to compensate for small numbers and weakness of my formations there.
