Current Thoughts on the Game: What do you think?

War in Spain 1936-39 is the first in a new wargame series, using a new Land-Sea-Air engine inspired by War in the Pacific - Admiral’s Edition. Gameplay and realism are improved by TRUE AI and a detailed Logistics systems. A hyper detailed OOB reaches down to battalion and company level. A beautiful, hand drawn, 5 nautical mile per hex map massively increases player immersion.

Current Thoughts on the Game: What do you think?

Post by Q-Ball »

Really liking it overall, as a former WITP-AE player, and actually interested in the Spanish Civil War, this is an excellent game.

It's obvious this is a better AI than the "usual" AI; I can tell alot of work went into it. That being said, so far it feels like humans are going to provide a much better challenge. My apologies as I hate to call anyone's baby ugly, but that's a limitation of AI.....I think PBEM is going to be the way to go. The AI is still making lots of repeated mistakes that a human player would not. (Running ships into obvious danger, allowing units to easily get cut off, that type of thing)

That being said, I'd like to see a couple patches come out before diving into a PBEM. There are some real bugs and crashes that are being fixed; no big deal against the AI since I'm just learning and messing around, but I think it needs to have a bit of stability before investing in a PBEM....hopefully in a month or two it will be time

Great so far though, appreciate the responsiveness and effort on this complex engine

I am glad you asked!

This game has me hooked!

I have little play against the AI, but I think it has its place like you said. PBEM just has a fun hook waiting for your results and humans like to tick you. :D

I have played a lot of WITE2 but nothing else, I maybe watched a few games of WITP; coming into this game is easier I think for scale and the Program runs well with my mileage.

I am excited to updated and continue my North SCN PBEM.
As I am getting a grasp of game, if you ever need a PBEM opponent feel free to message me.
Learning from blunders is the best way! 8-)

Thanks for the time.

It is by far the most complex and hardest wargame I have truly attempted to dedicate myself to in order to understand it and join the grognard community. (I have WitP AE and have dabbled with it a little but would by no stretch of the imagination call myself a "player" of said game).

I think that the map is beautiful, the UI is dated but serviceable, and the strategic depth is virtually unparalleled. I am repeatedly blown away by reading the manual, looking at the game, and watching tutorial videos on YouTube with just how many layers there are to making decisions each and every turn. There are some glaring bugs but patches are on the cusp of releasing that should resolve them. I'm shocked that a 32-bit game released in 2026, but that's not my decision to make.

I find the war itself fascinating as a testing ground for WWII and I hope that players don't immediately move onto the next game in this engine if it's a more popular theater. This has expanded my education on the Spanish Civil War.
