auto convert obsolete devices

Post by Chris21wen »

This game option cannot be controlled at game start, only through hotkey P withing the game.

It's not something I go into much but in my current game (more than 2 years old) under v26b the 'Auto convert obsolete devices' is OFF. If I start a new game, it's on. Now I don't remember turning it OFF or how long it's been OFF but that's not the question.

The question is, does it work because it's OFF but I have very few, as Japan, old obsolete device hanging around. It's might be because of the way devices work for Japan so I won't see much but as the Allies I would.

I assume the AI ignores this process.

Note I looked it up in the new manual and there's nothing?

Could be a relic from earliest version of the game. I think Auto Convert Obsolete is the same as Upgrade, so if you set units to upgrade their equipment (unless it is stockpiled) they would convert to another device. That includes squads updating their TOE to a newer year's TOE.

Poosible I suppose, the pop up says this. 'Convert squad/engineer type devices no longer being built to resources or next upgrade'.

I foumd some stuff in the forum that imples it's not just squads but any obsolete device that is no longer being used but it has to be at least 6 months old backed up by this New Feature from Sixth Official Update Jan 21 2012

'40. After 6 months, an expired pooled device (squad or engineer type) will slowly convert to the upgraded version; if Japan, obsolete devices will revert to the raw materials.'

If it isn't used then it needs to be gone, if it is it needs to be in the manual.

Chris,

To the best of my knowledge, through 1127, this feature is in the code and works as intended. As you note, for the IJ, this is actually a minor benefit. For the allies or the AI, it simply doesn't matter.

Caveat: the pool has to exist for at least 6 months AND there cannot be units in the replacement queue that would use the device. This is why even though there are a large number of "obsolete" devices for IJ, they all don't disappear because later divisions (the reserve units in mid '45 in particular) will use the devices.
