Observations on Bombing

War in Spain 1936-39 is the first in a new wargame series, using a new Land-Sea-Air engine inspired by War in the Pacific - Admiral’s Edition. Gameplay and realism are improved by TRUE AI and a detailed Logistics systems. A hyper detailed OOB reaches down to battalion and company level. A beautiful, hand drawn, 5 nautical mile per hex map massively increases player immersion.

Observations on Bombing

Post by Q-Ball »

My impressions on bombing.....

1. Seems like GROUND ATTACK is largely underpowered. I don't get much in results from bombing ground troops, and airpower does not seem very decisive in ground combat. Feels like it had more impact in the real SCW
2. AIRFIELD ATTACK, on the other hand, is really effective, and I wonder if it's overpowered. It is very difficult to defend, and you can cause alot of damage; it seems pretty easy to shut an airfield down
3. PORT ATTACK feels about right
4. CAP is generally not that effective; it's possible I may need to tinker with the altitude settings, and also adjust expectations (SCW aircraft have alot less firepower than ww2-era fighters)

Thoughts? What are others finding?

You are right about the weak air attack against the LCU.
I tried to convince the management to make the attack more effective...
Fortunately the game still uses the modifier 300, which I entered there a long time ago.
I think without this modifier you wouldn't kill a single soldier...

(probably the effort was to not make modern bombers killers in the engine, but there are very few modern bombers in the game)

I'd be content that even if casualties aren't the main result, but larger impact on disruption and fatigue.

I don't know the coding

but results are naturally influenced by experience on top of plane loadout (can throw in weather, terrain etc.)
as experience rating drops down, casualties are less but disruption and fatigue impacts can have less of a fall off.

or we could shift away from the devices including manpower and have them separate. That way results won't necessarily have to factor in both the device and manpower.

It can be effective against ground targets but it depends upon your settings and the target situation.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

Actually, I posted some aerial attacks on ground targets in my AAR. :ugeek:

Republican air raid at 96, 89 (Plains terrain)
Time: 0800. Weather in hex: Light Cloud wind 2
Raid was detected at 46 Kyds, est altitude 5000 feet
Time to intercept 1021 seconds

Republican aircraft:
7x Hispano Ni.52
3x Fokker F.VII
2x CASA Bre.XIX B.2
2x Hispano E-30
1x Ju K.30
5x Hispano Ni.52

No Nationalist Aircraft losses:

No Republican Aircraft losses:

Defender losses: 163 Casualties
Squads lost: 0 disabled, 18 destroyed
Vehicles lost: 8 disabled, 1 destroyed
Guns lost: 0 disabled, 0 destroyed
Units Destroyed: 0
Way too good. Especially for Republicans. Should be about 1/10 of this.

I will keep at the Ground Bombing to see if I can get better results.

I am flying at 5000 ft........small arms like MGs seem to reach up to 4000ft, and alot of units lack real AA guns, so 5000 ft seems like a pretty safe altitude

I know you'll get better results in open terrain, and with better trained pilots.....like WITP-AE

What's so funny? I don't have the game so I do not know what "settings" you can have there. Ground losses look too high to me, that's all. If you have something constructive to add, please do, otherwise take your smirking attitude elsewhere

You are the one complaining. You don't have the game so you don't know how the air units work and you probably didn't look at the AAR either.
