Unit Size and Combat Effectiveness

War in Spain 1936-39 is the first in a new wargame series, using a new Land-Sea-Air engine inspired by War in the Pacific - Admiral’s Edition. Gameplay and realism are improved by TRUE AI and a detailed Logistics systems. A hyper detailed OOB reaches down to battalion and company level. A beautiful, hand drawn, 5 nautical mile per hex map massively increases player immersion.

Unit Size and Combat Effectiveness

Post by Q-Ball »

This is a WITP-AE related question.....in that game, larger units are definitely more combat effective. They take less damage units as soon as you can for maximum effectiveness.

In WIS, however, is this the case?

Or, are a stack of sub-units just as effective in combat as if they were combined into a single consolidated Brigade or Regt?

Important question, because if the impact is the same, then the main benefit to combining units is to reduce unit clutter (which I admit is also important!).

I like to form up the regiments and brigades. Due to the issue with some divisions, I won't form any more of those up but those HQs will still help.

When there is a "cautious" attack which is a probing attack, some smaller units may be hit harder than the larger ones. The larger units seem to be able to handle things better with less disruption and fatigue which is probably because of the support elements.

since the AI doesn't "rebuild" units, it's hard to say if how casualties are determined took this into consideration or not.

I tend to form Regiments/Brigades, but I do so more for role-play / less individual unit clutter than for efficiency.
The lack of transparency in how various support squad types help a unit is frustrating for me.

Of course, larger units are more effective.
They use the support of smaller units and literally roll over individual enemy battalions.
I form brigades and use them to cover the line and for smaller attacks.
For the main strategic direction (for example, connecting with the north) I form divisions.
I have no problems with forming divisions.
It is a model invented by the project manager and a very good one.
Well-formed divisions (in some cases demotorized) are a huge advantage in playing against AI.

What about commanders? When you combine a smaller LCU's to let's say a brigade. But you still have sub-units and their leaders. Are these leaders used in the calculation during the battle? Or only brigade commander?

The AI does rebuild destroyed units, it does not combine the units into regiments/brigades.
