[Q] Missiles without targets

Post by Nikel »

Just a question regarding the distance that a missile without a target can last flying. Bug or WAD.

Just an example, SM-6 missiles launched from an American destroyer in the Eastern Mediterranean, should last to the South of Australia?

Or even beyond, to the South pole? One of them stuck there.

Missiles will continue to fly until they run out of fuel. There's currently no self-destruct.

Not sure what is going on with SM-6 over Australia. Please post a before and after save or scenario file in Tech Support.

Hi

Perhaps there should be self-destruct. It would avoid ridiculous situations (missiles going backwards and constantly changing direction or flying ridiculously far) like those seen in this attached scenario with the SM-3 and Arrow 3. Furthermore, it would surely improve performance with fewer units that are doing nothing.

They should but there's only so much time in the day. Other things have a much higher dev priority.

And there are some nuances beyond just self-destructing on a miss. One is modern missile being retargeted as a significant feature that actually is in CMO and a welcome capability. The other is the risk of friendly fire on a miss. Making similar to real life deconfliction a thing.

While I am not saying that missile should fly on forever, its not a simple solution. The biggest issue is the firing unit being slaved to WRA limitations on missiles that can go 100's of miles on a miss and locking out a unit from firing.
