Withdrawing Ship Sunk

War in Spain 1936-39 is the first in a new wargame series, using a new Land-Sea-Air engine inspired by War in the Pacific - Admiral’s Edition. Gameplay and realism are improved by TRUE AI and a detailed Logistics systems. A hyper detailed OOB reaches down to battalion and company level. A beautiful, hand drawn, 5 nautical mile per hex map massively increases player immersion.

Withdrawing Ship Sunk

Post by Q-Ball »

I noticed this in the manual regarding withdrawing ships:

Furthermore, when a ship with a withdrawal date sinks, another ship or even several
ships may take their place and withdraw in place of the sunken ship.

I decided to see how this works by getting a withdrawing ship sunk intentionally, the Italian cruiser Giovanni Della Bande Nere.

(This turned out to be much harder than I thought it would be, as this supposedly under protected cruiser ate 3 torpedos, 2 bombs, and 4 12-in shells before FINALLY going down!)

At 11/22/36, well past the withdrawl date for this unit, no other ships were withdrawn to replace this one

Is this working right? Or should I check the Italian reinforcements?

This is the first time I've heard of this...

I can assure you that there is no other Italian cruiser in the editor to replace the one that was sunk....

So, it sounds like that part of the manual is incorrect......that in fact, you will NOT have other ships taken to replace that withdrawn, sunken ship.

Correct?

If that is the case, then the Nationalist player is incentivized to take much riskier actions with the withdrawing ships, even reckless ones.....particularly in the last few days it's on the map. (Not saying that's right, that's just what the incentives are)

By the way, in 4 years of testing I have never had an Italian cruiser sunk by the Republicans....
(but of course it can happen).

I still live in the fact that this is a historical game. And the missions of the Italian warships were quite well written based on quality materials.

I also sunk CL Giovanni Della Bande Nere in my main scenario1936-1939 played with 165.XX, in my previous game. She crippled half of my DDs , but sank none :D She worths a f.. whole lot of victory points too.

It's very hard.....I was TRYING to get her sunk. She kept running for port, probably because the ship was on fire. The Captain was a coward!

I finally ran her around at full speed until her fuel ran out off Cartagena; that's when the BB sank her
