Turn 80 Allies
January 6, 1945.
Second part for D-Day hex.
D: E: F: G: There are near twenty more attacks that led to success on Brest but that would not be productive. There are also many hexes that failed in attacks. The point is, heavy losses on both sides.

Response to Bairdlander2
Response to Mr. Bairdlander2 on the Eastern Front.
On Page 17, halfway down you will find the Eastern Front advance. It is just after turn 79 and before turn 80. It is on two posts.
The subject line of first post reads, "1945".
The subject line of second part reads, "1945 Eastern Front".
I find it odd that more people have viewed page 18 of this AAR instead of the end of page 17 of this AAR.
Thank you for your question on this matter Mr. Bairdlander2. Yet now I have some potential bad news. As of a couple days ago Metalist has been experiencing a problem with WitW. The air phase for turn 81 processed correctly.
Moreover, when the ground phase for Axis was saved on a few occasions during turn processing, system seemed fine. However, when Metalist sent turn to WitW server, it did not register as completed. Metalist has been attempting to overcome this dilemma the last few days but so far no success. the Axis ground phase refused to show as a completed turn. Additionally, trying to get assistance from WitW staff support seems doubtful too. This puts completion of this challenge in jeopardy! I think the expanded air missions mess up WitW processing limits, as it relates to missions needing to be processed. After all, this scenario was created after main game was structured and no developer thought there could be so many missions. Each Allied phase can have near two hundred and fifty missions.
Best regards Mr. Bairdlander2,
Sincerely, Kent Kroeckel

1945 Air Pool
Torpedo Planes: I have switched to just one modern frame. Good production so this is why I did this.
Patrol aircraft: This is a bit more complex to show because United Kingdom have two distinct categories. Twin engine and four engine. Below are some select ones. Notice that main categories have plenty of frames to finish war. Americans have some too which are not displayed.
Transports: First I will display American air transports. They do not have many in this category.
United Kingdom air transports are separated into two and four engine categories. I will only be showing four engine.

Reconnaissance is the next category. Aircraft in this can be set at low, middle, and high Cameras. there are exceptions but I only want to address the majority. At beginning of war there are several low altitude cameras but from 1944 on there are enough frames to keep all at high altitude filming. this is what I have done. Often there is one less camera at higher than if set for lower but aircraft do not get shot down so much.
First is United Kingdom:
Following is American:
I will not be doing a separate category for tactical bombers since few Allied air frames are present.
Next main category covered is fighter bombers. And yes, tactical bombers do appear in this category because they are one of the same. I will not show all because there are too many but a good representation will be displayed.
United Kingdom:
American: This is only a partial list. Look at factory production of them; it is very strong.

I will only be showing United Kingdom night fighters since they represent the majority. America has some too but it would be redundant.
United Kingdom:
Final category I will be showing is level bombers. In this there is a sub category which is (Naval Only Level Bombers). As the name implies, they can only conduct naval operations. In essence, an extension of patrol aircraft. Germany has many of these squadrons while Allies only have 4-8 squadrons; depending on scenario.
United Kingdom heavy (4 engine) level bombers:
American heavy level bomber:
United Kingdom light (2 Engine bomber) level bomber: There are only two facilities still producing in this category. Could not show whole list though. American light bombers have many units and factories going so very different situation than below.

Turn 81
January 13, 1945.
Germany did not attacks this turn. Axis air phase Luftwaffe lost 85 while Allies lost 21. Below is chart. Weather in air is snow on all map areas. Snow and water levels are high everywhere, 4-8.
Victory points for turn were -29 and game total is -381.
Allies got very few bombing points since 1945 has a diminished level of return. Vengeance Weapon points are hard to stop due to weather and the bonus for Axis is double after European invasion. Due to this, I will probibly switch to massive tactical bombing when weather improves to cold.
Germany has not been conducting any naval operations despite Allies invading in several locations. We will see if this continues since Allies just invaded in three more locations.
On Allied air phase losses were 173 for Axis while Allies lost 362. Totals are 258 For Germany while Allies lost 383. Allies lost Eighteen more aircraft during ground support. Below is chart.
Italian Front: Three hexes were won by Allies but only two were occupied. First hex shown is a town that had a depot on it along with two flak units. That is why there are so many Axis casualties.
Last hex from this post shows the hex which keeps getting won by Allies but not occupied. Mountain hexes can be challenging if units are not positioned correctly. However, Germany is loosing many soldiers each time it is moved into.

Turn 81 Italy
January 13, 1945.
The final hex taken by Allies was also a mountain hex. It took two attacks to win it.
Attack one:
Attack two:
In this picture there are two Allied invasions taking place. At least one should be successful. And yes, there is one hex Italy has that one would think it would be part of Yugoslavia.
Final picture shows overview of Italian front. There looks to be some Axis exposure there developing.

Turn 81 Europe
January 13,1945.
Europe contact line has been connected. I was able to trace a red line from D-Day to Brest. And this is a big deal because now resources are connected along with rail.
Next picture shows landing south of Brest. As you can see, it too is not far from connecting. Below is red line, with green arrows of hope in cutting Axis units unless they withdraw.
Next picture shows another landing site that is very close to the above mentioned. There is also a third amphibious invasion happening and it is in blue. I think this will force Axis units to pull back from coast. Additionally, more German units will be withdrawing to the Eastern Front from now till turn 84.
Spain landing: It is going well there so hexes are converting to Allied control. I believe since it is isolated for Axis logistics, there will be a withdraw next turn. Allies will advance quickly with mechanized brigades.

German Air Pool
Metalist was so kind as to send me some of the German air pools. This is the type of challenge we are playing, always ready to show WitW players how to manage aspects of the platform. the point is not whether Metalist or myself are utilizing assets in the best method. Debate could be made about this! Do more, do less. However, the goal is show how to utilize resources so a new player can explore for themselves as to what feels right; in their play style.
I have four beautiful pool pictures for Axis air. First one is of reconnaissance. With only one major nation, Germany, it is easy to display the whole section. Once again, Thank You Metalist.
Axis Reconnaissance: First thing to notice is that there are 300 + aircraft frames. Given the burn ratio that will be enough for end of war. Two points to bring out is that there are not many factories left in production of this category. A second point is that a couple air frames in this are marginal at best. Yet pools in the good air frames along with a limited factory output will keep a sufficient supply to last the duration of war.
Next category is fighter and fighter bombers. Both of these categories are important to Germany whereas fighters for Allies was of little significance. Because of this, it takes two pictures to show the whole list. There is some overlap on second snapshot so look for that.
Axis fighter and fighter bomber: Part A
On this see how many factories there are. Still a substantial dedication of Axis resources to this air frame style. I am combining the two styles since they are so similar. Pools are not great but factory size will keep up with demand.
Axis fighter and fighter bomber: Part B
The first two models on this picture are repeats of the previous picture, at bottom of it. Still though, the same situation. Many factories will keep supply sufficient despite small pools.
Final Axis category for viewing is tactical bombers. Especially in 1945 Axis do not usually have many level bombers left. The same is true for patrol aircraft and torpedo bombers. So tactical bombers is the one air frame Germany still has to impact ground operations of the Allies. The pool is large (1,000 Plus) and I am sure Metalist wished he could train more pilots to sit in the empty cockpits. But attrition has limited that. In this category factories will make models that never fly.

Victroy Condition Change
January 20, 1945.
I talked to Metalist and he gave me permission to deviate from WitW platform norm. I requested to put more emphasis on tactical bombing rather than strategic bombing by Allies. Reason being, last turn Allies only achieved 2 victory points for this action. Of course it was snowing and the victory point chart in 1945 for strategic bombing is minimal. There will also be very few weeks of clear weather until after the ending of war.
Given location of Allied contact line, little will be accomplished on Vengeance Weapon sites. they are being bombed but Axis points will remain at 4-8 each turn.
Allied City captured points will remain marginal until end of war.
Allied constant attacks, which cause high attrition rates on both sides, will continue to give Germany victory points.
Continuous invasions will give Germany many victory points.
Conclusion: Game is already a minor victory for Germany and will remain so.
New scenario: Our new scenario in this challenge is the following.
Allies have stalled in European invasion. Italy is mud and snow. Stalin is not going to wait for months on the Elbe River for Germany to surrender. He wants to see Allied progress or Soviet forces will march over Germany until surrender or meeting Allies.
Berlin will fall along with Vienna but Munich is the new designated capital. A new German command will not consider surrender unless Paris is taken by Allies. That will make them see the futility of continuing. Allies must take Paris by May 8, 1945 or the war will continue.
Italy campaign is still in game but I do not know what to add so I came up with this. Germany should not let Milan fall or Germany will surrender. Both strategic goals will keep our challenge interesting. At this point victory points do not matter much but that does not mean either side should ignore them.
Metalist will be looking forward to this new dilemma for Germany.
Final thought: I have not looked at turn 82 yet so I do not know if Germany attacked or withdrew. I do not know if all three invasions were successful or none at all. I am now going to open the game. Good bye.

Turn 82 Air Phase
January 20, 1945.
Victory points: -31 for turn and game total is -412.
German air phase: Axis lost 65 while Allies lost 21.
Allied air phase: Axis lost 179 while Allies lost 396.
Air totals for only air phase: Germany lost 244 while Allies lost 417. A Luftwaffe advantage of 175. Good air action for snow in skies over map.
All three naval invasions were successful. However, one has no unit on hex due to many factors of attrition. Invasion hex next to port. Invasion during snow. Invasion hex next to four fortification city. The American infantry division was present during Axis phase but collapsed during Allied logistics. This can happen on occasion.
Other two invasion points were without issue. No Axis air naval interdiction either.

Turn 82 Allied Italian
January 20, 1945.
Italian campaign: Allies took three hexes in combat but only occupied one. Allies have more invasions and airborne drops once weather improves too. Because of this I need to be careful in displaying the whole contact line. It will be more of a closeup of situations.
First hex to show is a mountain one. BLM is working so want to take advantage of it. I believe attrition is starting to were down Axis forces since they are far from logistics. Terrain and bad weather do impact supply severely.
Second hex taken but not occupied is next to the first. It is also mountainous. Look at the losses.
Third hex is occupied and took two attacks to be victorious.

Turn 82 Spain Landing
January 20, 1945.
The area is slowly enlarging. The first picture I want to show is partition activity in area. It really helps out in strangling Axis supply so far from German source logistic.
There were several attacks and many were successful. Allies are challenged too with logistics due to bad weather but having captured a port along with the beach one, supply will be adequate. Rail though now needs to be repaired. Allies now have six RR headquarter divisions so plenty to have one for every landing site.
First hex shown was taken in one attack.
Next hex shown was also taken in one attack.
Final hex shown took two attacks to win. The first time each side lost nearly two hundred.
there is another hex next to this that was attacked and taken. It took five attempts and in the end Germany lost nearly a 1,000 while Allies lost nearly 250. There are many more attacks that are not successful and very costly.

Turn 82 Western France Landing
January 20, 1945.
I wanted to bring up a point on how Allied landings can get blocked if both sides to a beach are occupied by German zone of control. Below is where an American infantry division collapsed due to brutal attrition. This happened during Allied logistical phase. As I stated in previous post, won invasion hex but could not place a unit onto the now empty hex. Fortunately, Allies were able to win an adjacent hex so beach was made accessible. Blue is beach and red circle shows the hex which needed to be taken.
Below is the attack results.
The above attack opened up the whole beach. Following is next hex taken. This is isolating the two ports. I circled them in blue.
Final picture shows main French invasion sector. I have traced the contact line in red. On the southern part Allies have crossed the main river. This puts great pressure on German units next to western coastline due to potential isolation. I believe Germany will now withdraw from west coast; but I have been wrong in saying this before. Metalist does not withdraw from hexes unless absolutely nessecary. However, I do hope he miscalculates so that Allies can create a pocket of isolation for German units. There were many attacks and several were successful but it would be redundant to show them.

Turn 83 German phase
January 27, 1945.
Weather in sky is snow everywhere.
Ground has snow with levels between 4-8.
Many minor rivers are frozen.
Victory points: For turn -29 and game total is -441.
Axis air phase: 83 losses for Germany while Allies lost 28.
In Italy Germany withdrew from part of the contact line that was exposed. The continual attacking along Italian front forced this Axis repositioning. That is Allied Command thought's at least. Ha. (Metalist will never let me isolate German units). Section is circled in green.
I am surprised Metalist decided to send several more units to defend Spain invasion site. It is so far from German logistical supply sources. This will force Allied Command to commit more units to the location. It has become an exciting part of the map.
In France Germany withdrew from some areas as well. Around D-Day there are a couple hexes but I have pictured the bottom of the French contact line. It is only separated by one hex and then another section of invasion area will be linked up. Green shows withdrawn hexes and black represents the separating hex.

Turn 83 Allied Phase
January 27, 1945.
Allied air phase: Germany lost 103 while Allies lost 274.
German total: 186.
Allied total: 302.
That is a Luftwaffe advantage of 116; before ground support.
Italian campaign.
Allies are conducting one more naval invasion next to Yugoslavia. Allied units are marching up, what I call the Yugoslavia Peninsula. It bottlenecks on third port, Trieste. I failed to mention that while units cannot go into Yugoslavia, zones of control do. Black line is border of nation. Blue hexes represent task force and invasion hex.
Next hex of Italy is overview of contact line. Three hexes were taken and two of them occupied by Allies.
Of the two hexes successfully attacked in middle contact line, one was occupied. the BLM is working so am able to show it. It only took one attack.
Next picture shows a rather risky maneuver. During snow, Allies conducted an air assault mission. Making matters worse, there was a German security unit there. Reconnaissance had not revealed it. And if seen I would have not conducted the mission. Surprisingly, all worked out well. Below is snapshot.
The other hex taken took four attacks and would be redundant to display. It was though, a costly hex for both sides. I think near 1,500 for each side. I think it is self apparent why Allied conducted this airborne mission. Precarious now but the opportunity would be lost next week.

Turn 83 France
January 27, 194.
Looked at air losses and they have changed by a lot. Germany lost almost 70 transports. During Axis air phase they had lost 18. Normal. However another fifty were destroyed but Allies did no attacks on air bases. There was a second airborne mission on the city of Tours. The airbase hex was showing empty but my guess is that there were many transports there. It is the only thing I can think of. There were also two flak units there. Allies took hex so it looks like all was destroyed. Hex is circled in purple.
The lower beach landing below Brest has been connected. In the process a German unit has been isolated. A rare event in this challenge!
Main D-Day is moving a few hexes at a time. Below shows this. Together though, pressure is building on Western France Axis contact line.
Another landing zone is about to be connected. Just one hex to go, along with a couple more ports. One of those ports is already isolated. Circled in black.
Losses for Allies are near 20,000. Germany has lost nearly 30,000 for this phase.

Turn 83 Airborne & Spain
January 27, 1945.
I was planning on ending turn soon but got a crazy idea. What if the three German units on Le Mans are HQ type or had been routed. They would have no combat value. I really wanted that city too. With it much rail gets cut, forcing Axis logistics to suffer on French west contact line. Allies went for it; fully expecting failure. Snow, three Axis units. However, it worked well for Allies. This is one of those weird times when German units are still in hex even though Allied airborne division has won the hex. I believe on German logistic phase they will relocate automatically. There were two flak units on hex too that were destroyed.
Since still on same turn I will go ahead and show Spain invasion site. Next picture is overview.
One battle and hex was taken.
One more battle and another hex.
the final hex for combat (not shown) took two attacks but you get the idea. Stretching the Axis resources. Next week is the last turn for Axis German units being sent to Eastern Front. There was one naval invasion this week but many more have been created. They are great at cutting supply since Germany is so far from logistics. Allies still have both Mulberry ports too; if needed.
