Post by SierraJuliet »

Zebrazwo, you asked about the situation regarding supply, resources, fuel and oil. I’ve attached the industry totals as they are at the end of the first week. HI has increased by 16 969 to be at 66 969. Oil started out at 3.232 million and now sits at 3.137 million. Similarly, resources have dropped from 10.23 million to 9.497 million. Fuel will be dependent upon the amount of oil of course. For the time being I am concentrating on getting the Home Islands oil production going. I think all the oil fields on the Home Islands start out as damaged and need to be repaired. Still a way to go with a few centres being stubborn over getting sufficient supply in to reach that 10 000 supply mark I need for the repairs.

Supply is the big one in LST’s mod. LST recommends increasing supply production before embarking upon any program of HI and Shipyard expansion. Given the exorbitant cost to expand either of these, getting extra supply into the system goes without saying. The expansion of LI is not to be taken lightly either. Each expansion of a LI centre will cost 100 supplies with another 500 supplies to complete the repair and get it into production. Each new LI centre will suck up 600 supplies with the net result being 2 supply points produced each day. After 300 days that initial investment of 600 supply points will be repaid and from that point on each expanded LI will be providing 2 supply points each day above what was being produced at the commencement.

During the first week I expanded to 136 new LI centres at a total cost of 81 600 supply. To date I have expanded supply production to 272 supplies a day. I’ll continue to expand during the first month or two as sooner each centre comes online the bigger the pay back.

After one week shipping on both sides is feeling the pinch. Allied shipping losses are in front but with most of them being 1-point ships it is the Japanese vessels which lead in the points lost category.

I’m confident that the Allies have lost the following classes of vessels.

PG 3
APc 9
AKL 25
AM 1
PT 4
ARD 1
YP 4
YO 3
MTB 2
SS 1
LB 2
xAK 3
xAP 1

59

As for Japan this is the bill.

xAK 5
CM 3
PB 1
DD 1
DMS 2
xAP 1
AV+ 1
TB 2
AMC 1
MTB 1
xAKL 1

19

The debacle at Makin and the air assault at Vigan contributed to most of this. The Thai Navy has also lost several ships.

The arrival of BB Yamato is welcome but as this is LST’s local yokel variant of the ship it is straight into the yards to bring the main battery up to scratch. 119 days before this one becomes a mainstay of the fleet.

A division has been landed ashore at Wenchow. We find 406AV already entrenched behind the decent fortifications.
One more division plus artillery will be needed before any assault is contemplated here.

@SJ
A note about production- It matters a lot where do you expand the LI production. I my past Bottlenecks games I faced 2 main issues in Industry:
- getting enough RES into Home Islands to run the existing industry there (IIRC it was around 200 000k/day needed)
- the fuel cost of doing so (made worse by the smaller ship capacity)

Every industry point you expand at home makes both of these issues worse. I would strongly recommend that you expand LI in places like Vietnam/Malaya to produce supply where you need it anyway for years ahead (and where you will have enough RES without having to ship them). At worst, if you are sure you can open the Golden Highway, then in China or Manchukou.

Then you can 'save up' the supply in the HI for those rainy days when it is raining 500 pounders.

Remember that the Allies can destroy RES or Heavy Industry production via Strat Bombing easily enough but LI is the most resilient of them all.

LST has adjusted inputs/outputs obviously. Interesting to see where you get to with LI and such.

Looks as though things are moving forward.

Taking Johnston puts a wrench in his plans I will bet.
Industry is indeed a little different here. Refineries and HI no longer produce supply so light industry becomes all inmportant to crank out supply. To offset this LI now produces 2 supply. Supply becomes so important if expansion is part of the IJ thinking. HI now costs 2000 supply to effect a repair and shipyards are 5000! Thankfully it only costs 500 supply to repair LI. So with Japan desperate to effect expansion and meet the American industrial might the race is on to expand sufficient LI quickly enough so that HI can also expand. Then of course there is the ever present bottleneck of suppying enough oil/fuel and resources to feed the HI. No point in expanding HI if there is insufficient fuel and resources to keep industry functioning. This is a marvelous game within the game.

Johnston Island was nothing more than a sideshow to grab LST's attention and make him think about a possible threat to PH and the associated islands. Also a nice little points pick up to eliminate the land forces on the island. The unit used here (the one prepped for Wake Island) has been picked up and is on the way to a new adventure.

Yes, getting sufficient resources back to the HI is quite the bottleneck. It is fuel expensive and the amount required is enormous. I was suffering industry failure in late '43 due to lack of resources in my last game and LST has also mentioned that he also has trouble with this issue.

I agree that expanding near the resource centres is the best option. I'm not sure about opening the Golden Highway and we shall have to see how my China operations develop. If all goes well there maybe a chance of seeing that happen.

Thanks for the tips.
