SLAR (SAR) performance in-game

Post by Squash2131 »

Specifically referring to later MiG-25R variants, was their SLAR really this effective IRL?
From what I saw from (albeit sparse) Russian-language sources, they had at best 7-10m resolution (talking about Shompol specifically, in-game it's called ''Tompol'' for some reason), yet in this game their performance seems kinda weird, they detect everything at almost maximum range, no issues, nothing escapes their gaze.
Sabla which is an earlier radar deployed on MiG-25RBS performs the same, despite being an older system, though I can't find any data for it.
For example, you place an M109 battery at their extreme range (40nm), and they detect it in seconds.
Are the sources wrong? Or is this area of the game not yet adequately modeled?
Cause I highly doubt 1970's/1980's SAR installed on tactical aircraft could detect such small targets so easily at such extreme ranges.

Here's what I'm talking about.
This is a singular Humvee. Maybe I'm really clueless but the idea 1970's SAR deployed on MiG-25 could detect a Humvee at 70 km in seconds seems kinda preposterous.

Synthetic Aperture Radars could do that.

Here's a comparison of the same imaging target from two different time periods, one of which was the first ever airborne SAR image from the 50s https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_o ... images.JPG. Of course at your oblique angle, the truck will look...very different, but it's likely recognizable to a trained eye.

The unmodeled element in CMO is that this happens instantaneously - rather than after the aircraft returns to base, processes the film, and the analysts have a look. :geek:

CMO has the full capability to do that. Multiple ways in fact. Recon as a separate side or comms disconnect just off the top of my head.

Sorry, maybe I'm misunderstanding something, but how could a radar with 10m resolution possibly spot a non-moving Humvee?
