Attack Odds

Post by grenadier98 »

Are the attack odds in anyway some kind of prediction when it comes to combat losses like in games as Strategic Command or Order of Battle? Or do they mean anything else? Because my casualty rates are almost always worse than those odds. Either the enemy suffers less casualties as predicted or I suffer more or both. It's pretty rare to see numbers close to the odds.

Hi,

It is not a combat loses prediction, but an odd of relative strength. 3vs1 does not mean you inflict 3x the loses or win 3 times out of 4.

It means you have 3 times the defender's "power". Usually 3vs1 is beginning to be an "ok" attack. Anything less is usually a risky attack and will more often than not fail (or still win - by taking the hex - but at great loses). Of course, it is an average. From time to time, some 2vs1 attack can be surprisingly good and some 5vs1 attack surprisingly bad. You can never be sure, but with experience one eventually get some feel of it.

Thanks, guess this will help me not to get angry about "bad results" :).
I do own the game for several years now, but until recently I never got into it. Played Strategic Command in the past and liked it. Also tried to get into War in the East, but the complexity and epic manual drove me away, maybe when I go into retirement and I will have much more time. :D Warplan seems like a manageable middle ground beetween both.

I do believe Warplan is the best wargame for its scale. It does have surprising realism and subtleties. First time I see supply well rendered at this scale. In some other games of this scale, one could supply half the allied armies in France with a single port! Here you never have enough ports; each extra one will help!

The best learning curve for WP is to play against a human. There are also quite a few AAR that are instructive.

I am also playing WitE, and the game is awesome, but it does take an incredible amount of time!

Have fun!
