Seeking interest for Iran-Iraq war scenario development

Post by Zumwalt_446 »

Greetings all,

I am attempting to create a scenario series focused on the Iran-Iraq war (specifically, the Battle of Dezful in January 1981) using the FCCW engine. I have started looking into map creation from real-world imagery as part of this effort, and intend to leverage what (limited) information is available on the war for OOB creation and deployments.

Would this be of interest to anyone? If so, feel free to either comment here or message me directly.

According to our survey, there is strongest interest in the 1991 Gulf War and the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

Hi
There is actually more here that can be applied to your project than meets the eye. First off you might want to consider using the “Campaign Series Middle East” (CSME) game instead for your project rather than Flashpoint Cold War, as the OOB’s and equipment that are tailored for the Iran Iraq war that are already built into it are massive.

From what Jason Petho (who leads the CS Series project group) has said over the years I think he would welcome the creation of some Iran Iraq war content for the game and could possibly be up for helping you with map creation and adding the odd specialist unit not already in the game.

Even if you want to stay with CS Cold War it would still be worth getting your hands on CSME for all the OOB and other data on the war that it contains.

As regard sources book wise I would recommend the following

“The Iran-Iraq War, The Greatest Land War of the Late Twentieth Century” authored by Tom Cooper, E R Hooton, Bob Mackenzie, Farzin Nadimi and published by Helion 19th July 2022. It is available in both print and ebook versions. This is the larger version that combines the material of the 4 previous shorter titles that Helion published on the war with an extra section on organisation and weapons deliveries. The book also has a fair number of operational level colour maps.

“The Iran-Iraq War” by Pierre Razoux and Nicholas Elliott published by Harvard University Press 13 Nov. 2015, available in both hardback and Kindle. This deals with the wider conflict including the political side but also has plenty of detail on the battles and quite a few black and white maps that are in a somewhat larger scale than the Helion book.

On the mapping side of things have you had a look at the open source “FlopS Map” website https://flopp.net/ ? This is a resource for selecting an area of terrain from multiple world maps, that you can zoom in on down which has father tools to select and record a defined section of the map that you can then set up as overlay to make maps.

I think that the Campaign Series guys are working on something like this to support map making for CS series games, that it will make available in game in the near future, and you might be able to adapt it to the Flashpoint Cold War as well.

Best of luck with this and PM me if you want to discuss further.

Kind regards
Ian
