Totally, and that alone says it all. IJN ships on fire that don't sink are commented on, OTOH USN ships that sink for any reason are commented on. IJN is really on the wrong side of that discussion ....

Looks like it was a pretty good idea to split up and hunt down those loose ends.

Seems like you feel a little more in control now? Or are you just bluffing ;) ?

Hi zebrazwo. The idea to split up and deal with little ships everywher was good. My excution of movement orders this turn was not so good. Maybe a little more in control... maybe. Between LST making things tricky and me making so questionable calls it has been a tough opening.

An eventful end to 1941. I had been looking forward to a turn without too much bother happening until naval action reports around Corregidor started coming up and I realized that Furutaka and company had reacted instead of focusing upon moving well away from Corregidor. My mistake for not thinking the course directions through coupled with a generous reaction order. I know full well the absolute danger of the guns and minefields of Corregidor and managed to set up an encounter where there would only be one result. LST generously offered to run the turn again, but I’d already decided to get over it and move on with the game. So, in the end 1 light cruiser and 2 destroyers lost.

As for Furutaka? She is still above the waves and is 1 hex away from Vigan. Amazing that she has managed to survive after large caliber hits and multiple mine hits. But there she is with the following damage 66 74(44) 17(07) 20. A bad situation but we shall do our best to shepherd her to Vigan where there is a base force.

I’ll finish off with a screenshot of the course that Furutaka and company were meant to take.

Well, you said it well. All I can add is "Ouch!".

We've all done this before, sadly, I know I will do it yet again ... hopefully you won't. ;)

It's a long game, CL's are fairly useless (just bigger, slower DD's with less firepower), if you save the CA, you haven't lost much.

Yes, just move on and accept that my Admiral had a brain explosion. Saving the CA is a game within a game... the odds are stacked against her.

If you can get her to a port and disband her, the fires should be put out. Then, though of course, it is the months of repairs to nurse her back to the HI for a month, or more, of RSY. I suggest Hiroshima ...

Let us see if she can make it to Vigan first and get the fires out... IF the first are doused and the flooding halted it is going to take a good long time to make her somewhat seaworthy for a homebound passage. It will be a months long job if all goes well. Ashigara is out for a couple of months from her torpedo damage and Yamashiro is about to take up her berth in the HI for repair. Akagi is still hanging around in the Central Pacific and will soon make the trek back to HI waters.

Ashigara is out for a couple of months from her torpedo damage and Yamashiro is about to take up her berth in the HI for repair. Akagi is still hanging around in the Central Pacific and will soon make the trek back to HI waters.
This is the true IJN players credo: managing the list of ships that need to get into RSY!!!!

There are always so many more ships than there is RSY berths .... after the first couple of months, the tracker page that I use the most, by far, is the Ship Repairs page. Figuring out which one is next, how long on RSY vs Pierside, when the next ship can get in, how much are they repairing (sinking slowly) while cruising ....

What's your take on losses so far, SJ?

More or less than expected or "just about right" ;) ?

Hi zebrazwo. It is far from “just about right” . Certainly, way more than I would want but LST is not messing around, and his active defence is having success.

Lost army points stand at Allied 732 and Japan 88.

Lost aircraft points stand at Allied 224 and Japan 334. The loss of a CVL and CS ships has contributed heavily with the following lost on ground figures boosting the lost Japanese aircraft.

39 F1M2 Reikan
32 E13A1 Raiun
21 B5N1 Kankoh
20 A5M4 Kanson

Pilot losses for Japan currently stand at

25 MIA
20 WIA
105 KIA

Lost shipping on the reports is Allied 128 (718 points) Japan 95 (1214 points). Too my mind way too high a figure this early in the war.

Here is the break down on types of Japanese ships lost.

CVL 1
BB 1
CA 1
CS 2
DD 16
TB 10 (all Thai except for 1)
PB 7
SC 2
MTB 6 (all Thai)
AMC 1
CM 3
DMS 6 (2 Thai in this total)
AV 3
AO 1
ACM 1
AMc 3
xAP 1
xAK 25
xAKL 4

Of the destroyers here is the break down in types lost.

Kagero 2
Shiratsuyu 2
Akatsuki 2
Fubuki 3
Shikinami 1
Kamikaze 1
Minekaze 2
Wakatake 1
Momi 1
R’1916 1 (Thai)

Of those 25 xAK lost this is the break down of the bigger ones lost.

Yusen S 4
Yusen A 3
Yusen N 6
Kyushu 2

Of the Allied ships this is the small list of greater than 10 points ships I’m certain are off the board.

BB/BC Arizona, Oklahoma, Repulse
CA Houston
xAP President Coolidge, Ernest Hinds
ARD YFD-1 Dewey

Most Allied naval losses are the pesky 1-point Philippines ships.

Pilot and aircraft losses will soon ramp up as I begin the aerial assault on Singapore. Recon reports at least 200 fighters based there so it is going to be difficult.

Minefield at Mersing in case he tries it again ?

Yeah I thought you would say it was worse than you wanted. He's been doing some fine surprises in the naval department.

Lots of fighters at Singers - maybe night bombing of the airfield to damage planes and the runway? Although that really depends on what forces you have available to fight his inevitable strong CAP.

Minefileds exist at Mersing along with the sea hexes between Mersing and Singapore. LST cleans them up and I keep on laying them. So far rather ineffective. Plenty of Japanese subs in the area but also not achieving a great result.

Yes, LST is getting great results from his naval forces... keeping them alive, gaining experience and thinning my naval forces.

Night bombing of Singers, so far not brilliant, but I will keep on prodding with this one. The only way I see around this is to build up a big figher force and then sweep, sweep and sweep.

What can I say about Kuching. I knew this cruiser assault was highly likely and planned accordingly. LST asked me if I had tried to pull off an intercept… I’ll let my reply do the talking

I can answer your question about a Kuching trap. I fully expected you to pay Kuching a visit and there was a welcoming committee waiting. I'm quite sure your cruiser buzz saw sailed straight through a newly laid minefield (not unexpected that it was avoided), tripped the submarine line, slaughtered the convoy and sallied forth homeward bound with not 1 but 2 of my SAG groups not bothering to respond just one hex! As you can imagine there was much abuse hurled at the monitor which did absolutely nothing nor did it make me feel any better.

I was pleased that I'd correctly predicted your move, but my SAG placement was astray. I suspect there are many reasons why there was no reaction. The trouble with intercepts is working out the most likely line of approach and in this case the position of Singapore meant several possibilities and I positioned accordingly... but not quite in the right place. It would have been quite the slogging match if the SAGs had of met each other.

Hobart came up in the end of turn reports as having sunk from a collision. Whilst I didn't put much credence into the sinking report, I was satisfied that it probably had been involved in a collision as your TF was much closer to Kuching than I expected it to be. 3 damaged cruisers is a high price.

I’ve included a map of the set up for this turn. When grabbing the shot I noticed that the SAG on hex 57,86 (made up of Kongo, Haruna, Hyuga, Chokai, Kumano and escorts) was correctly set to patrol with reaction but I see that a destination hex of Kuching was also set. Could this have been the cause of no reaction?

As for DD Kawakaze… she leads a charmed existence after meeting this lot and escaping with something like 19 system damage!

Kido Butai, although powerful, was a raiding force, and this is exactly how the Japanese understood its usage. 'Shattered Sword'
