New scenario for testing: A failed union, 1994

Post by Stanley_The_Rolmate »

Hello everyone, I've got a new scenario for you to test. The scenario depicts the air war during the first day of the 1994 Yemeni civil war.

Scenario description:
Officially, Yemen united on the 22nd of May 1990 when the Yemen Arab Republic (North Yemen), led by Ali Abdullah Saleh, and the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (South Yemen), led by Ali Salem al-Beidh, officially united.
But after years of negotiations, there were still major rifts between the Northerners and Southerners. As a result of this, despite earlier agreements, the Northern and Southern militaries never merged.
During the unification process, the Southerners felt increasingly politically and economically marginalized.
In August 1993, former PDRY leader Ali Salem al-Beidh left for Aden. During the unification talks, it was decided that three brigades of the southern army would be stationed in northern Yemen, and two northern brigades would be deployed in the south.
Because of the breakdown in negotiations, Beidh attempted to recall the southern brigades from the north but was refused by Saleh, and the Northern Republican Guard surrounded the southern brigades.
After numerous small-scale clashes between these units, the southern brigades were ordered to extract themselves to the South.
This resulted in a major confrontation between the southern 3rd Armored Brigade and northern forces around Amran and a series of smaller clashes between the 25th Armored Brigade and the northerners around Dhamar.
In the end, only a battalion of the 3rd Armored Brigade managed to reach Aden, and the 25th Armored Brigade was further surrounded.
Following these clashes, the southerners started planning to destroy the northern units deployed in the south. They decided that air superiority was required to complete this operation, and the PDRYAF was ordered to prepare an aerial offensive against the YARAF and various leadership and economic targets in the North.

V1.2 changes:
- Added scoring tresholds
- Added markers for cities
- Cleared log
- Grouped PDRY ground forces
- Fixed some spelling errors.

Thanks for the new scenario.

A failed union, 1994 v1.0, tested on B1868.

SPOILERS ALERT.

Per instructions in the briefing, launched a bombing attack vs important structures on Sanaa. It was a complete disaster, the air defenses are very powerful.

Stopped playing when there were still 22 h to go and with -60 points. My air force was decimated, and the land forces, not under my control, were immobile.

Besides I noticed the following:

- Typos:

Description: "Officially, Yemen united... officially united." in the first phrase.

Briefing: cabality, brach, it's (3 times) in the YARAF description, should be its or theirs? Hodeidah is also written as Hodeida.

- Add markers of towns cited in the description/briefing.

- Message log is not clean when you start the scenario.

- Marker geographical aim point in Oman, role?

- ACs unavailable: transports, helicopters.

- There are Bar Lock radars damaged or without sensor.

- Group the land brigades.

- Why the land units not under your command? Sporadically they will defend vs air attack, but will not engage nearby land units.

- No victory/defeat thresholds defined.

- More Hinds please :)

- Nothing happens in the North. While the 25th armored brigade is decimated by air attack when they stop defending.

- What sources did you use, any Helion book?

Thanks for testing the scenario! :D

In my experience, using the aircraft armed with rockets and OFAB-100s to take out the SAMs defending Sanaa first and then striking the targets around the city was pretty effective. Flying low and fast the entire route is also really important, as is attacking the YARAF airbases.

I've uploaded a new version based on your feedback.

- Typos:

Description: "Officially, Yemen united... officially united." in the first phrase.

Briefing: cabality, brach, it's (3 times) in the YARAF description, should be its or theirs? Hodeidah is also written as Hodeida.

Will do another round of spell cheks. Hodeida has multiple translations

- Add markers of towns cited in the description/briefing.

Will do.

- Message log is not clean when you start the scenario.

Thanks, will fix.

- Marker geographical aim point in Oman, role?

It's for an event.

- ACs unavailable: transports, helicopters.

They're just there for show.

- There are Bar Lock radars damaged or without sensor.

These are meant to represent radars that are out of service.

- Group the land brigades.

- Why the land units not under your command? Sporadically they will defend vs air attack, but will not engage nearby land units.

They're just there as targets for aircraft. I don't think CMO currently simulates land combat in a realistic or even enjoyable way, and having them engage each other tends to really slow the scenario speed down in my experience.
I've changed the side names to reflect the fact that the player only controls the PDRY's air force.

- No victory/defeat thresholds defined.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I forgot those.

- More Hinds please :)

Unfortunatly most of the South Yemeni Hinds were desttroyed during the short civil war in 1986.

- Nothing happens in the North. While the 25th armored brigade is decimated by air attack when they stop defending.

That's why you've got to use your aircraft to support and defend them ;) And the northernmost brigade is just there for show, as I couldn't find any info about them being attacked during the start of the war.

- What sources did you use, any Helion book?

Yes, I mostly used Helion's 'Hot Skies over Yemen Volume 1', and 'North and South Yemen comparative Military Capabilities' (https://www.cia.gov/readingroom/docs/CI ... 0002-6.pdf). And some other books and sites

Just finished the first wave strike
I won't call it a failure, but definitely not a success.

Su-22 air group suffered heavily.

Total 11 ingress, only 6 engress from the sky over the Sanaa

Lost 5 and the surviving 4 suffered some damage from AAA fire.

First wave strike targeted a SA-3 site, Radio station, MOD and president palace. each strike interval 1 min with each other
In the end I only destroyed the MOD and president palace. Radio station still stands there and will continue spread lies about our righteous resistance 8-)
