LST had not picked up that this sole unit had been left to make a foray into Sinyang. By the time he had picked up on it and asked if I could bombard only and allow it to return to where he had intended for it to go I had already sent back the turn with orders for an all-out attack. I’d been watching and as soon as it entered the hex the orders went out to hammer it. LST graciously let it play out. It is easy to miss small things.

Yes, it was satisfying to demolish Admiral Phillips light cruiser fleet.

In discussing with LST it seems that the plan was to wear down the battleship SAG and then pounce with the larger SAG containing BB Revenge. LST hadn’t planned on the second SAG being in the area, although it was being picked up by submarines not far from Kuching only days before. I had the 2 SAGs patrolling in the area to protect the Kuching airfield. LST has demonstrated that he is prepared to use his SAGs to carry out continual bombardments of my coastline bases. This, however, wasn’t another raid but a calculated effort to target my SAG.

A good result for me even with the damage that has been handed out. CA Atago seemed to be the standout ship in my cruiser SAG. If I recall correctly Atago scored at least 1 of the torpedo hits on CA Exeter and got one on CA Australia which turned out to be a dud. If that torpedo had of exploded, I think Australia would have been in serious trouble.

My destroyers seemed to be very brittle with almost every first hit on them being a penetrating hull hit which resulted in some kind of serious damage. Fortunately, my lost ships score from this battle currently stands at 1 destroyer with DD Umikaze in serious trouble with damage stats of 49 84(49) 12(03) 03. She is heading to Kuching with escort, but it is a course filled with enemy submarines. If I can keep it at 1 destroyer traded for 1 CA, 4CL and 2DD that will be a very good result. I will try and hunt down some stragglers, but we shall see how that goes. I have enough undamaged ships, but the rate of ammunition use was high to extreme so that may have an impact upon the next day’s result.

The surprise from the day was the lack of hits received from BB Revenge. I noted only 1 15 inch hit which was on CA Mikuma. Mikuma ended the day with stats of 22 05 09 00 – pretty good considering that hit plus a few others received during the battle.

The disappointment of the day was the dud rate for torpedoes – 50%! Of all the torpedoes (including aerial) unleashed 3 hits were managed from ships and 1 from planes. I’ve referred to the dud on CA Australia but the single successful hit from the Kuching planes was a dud on BB Revenge… how I would have wished for that one to have exploded.

I’ve also added a screenshot of most damaged ships which ended up together in the same TF. The other damaged ships not in that TF are;

DD Hibiki 20 00 02 00
DD Shirakumo 31 12(02) 08 00
CA Chokai 11 00 00 00
