Monsoon effect

Post by Chris21wen »

I'm a confused. Here's what I understand, basically half is delivered

The following was written in 2011. https://forums.matrixgames.com/viewtopi ... 2#p2791192

'Monsoon Effects (May 15 – Oct 15)

Actually, the initial notes on the monsoon season was off. Its confirmed by Andy not being Jan-April, but from 15th of May to the 15th of Oct.

Monsoon affects base supply in Burma region. It does not affect weather in the game.

The main bases affected are the north Burmese ones north of Mandalay and the Assam bases east of Terapo plus Akyab and Chittagong. [And all of Thailand]

The way the new restriction works is that the amount of supply a base can receive per day is X x (Port+AF+Fort) so a base that is a trail base with no main road or rail connection may have a value of 50 say it starts as port 0, af 0, fort 3 then that means the base can receive 50 x 3 or 150 tonnes of supply per day over the jungle trails.

During the monsoon season all bases are reduced to 50% of normal capacity therefore the base will only receive 75 tons per day by land.

Thus the little un-built up bases cannot sustain huge forces'

The supply rules have changed since then. As I understand it the amount of overland supply reaching a destination is based on supply path traced as a percentage. I'm assuming that the monsoon halves this figure.

I don't t think that this change has an impact. Even if the supply path could theoretically deliver more supplies based on 'percentage', the supply cap of the base will throttle the maximum amount of supplies arriving in the hex per turn. And that supply cap is halved during monsoon. If the supply path can only deliver less than the supply cap or the halved supply cap, the base will receive this lesser amount.
Be advised that base with a supply cap value in place but no airbase, port or forts to multiply with, has a supply cap of 1000.

Thanks for the response but I'm really confused about this cap of 1000 so lets forget about the Monsoon bit and look at basic overland supply.

Here's what the manual says. No figures as usual but there is the Logistics 101 but that was written in 2011, https://forums.matrixgames.com/viewtopi ... 1#p2736079

15.1
'Twice a day, during the Supply Needs Calculation and Overland Supply Movement Phases, the computer calculates the
supply needs of all the units and bases in the game. It then looks for units and bases that need supplies, and which are
near bases ((or ground units in the same hex) that have an abundance of supplies. Supplies are then automatically
transported overland to the needy units and bases if there is a clear supply path on the ground. Many supply operations
occur during the daily Supply Operations Phase.'

9.2.2
'Bases also can contain stockpiles of supplies, fuel, resources and oil (resources and oil only when production is on). Fuel
stockpiles are used to refuel ships, while supply stockpiles are used to maintain aircraft, resupply ground units, and replenish
naval ammunition. Each day supplies from a base’s stockpile are distributed to ground units in the same hex as needed.
Supply, fuel, resources, and oil stockpiles will also be moved automatically from bases overland to restock other bases or
ground units that are running low on these items if the two bases (or ground unit) are linked by a valid supply path. When
these items are automatically moved to another hex, some of the items are expended during the transfer (never more than
20% will be expended). Once supplies move to a ground unit, any excess supplies over and above the supplies needed for
the ground unit will be shared with any other friendly ground units or base in the hex that are short on supplies.'

Where does this supply cap come form? As I understand it supply requirements are calculated based on the ground and air units at the base and not the size of the base although a base does limit how much it can store.

Assuming nothing happens at a base. A base calculates what supply it requires per turn and the game tries to send 3x that amount. This extra comes from bases with at least 2x their own required supply. The amount of supply reaching the destination in one supply trace is based on the supply path value.

Putting some figure to this. If a base requires 1K the game attempts to send an enough supply keep it topped up to 3K. Lets assume this extra 2K supply comes from a base with lots spare supply.

And this is where I start to get confused and there appears three options here.
  • The source sends 2K, the supply path is traced to the destination base but in so doing it loses say 50% to transportation cost etc and what arrives is just 1K. The base now has 2K, still 1K short requiring another supply trace but each supply trace loses 50% each time so the base can never actually reach the 3K figure..
  • The source send 4K, 2K arrives and the base now has it's 3K. This works.
How does a supply cap fit in? Is it a storage cap/limit at the base or a delivery cap to the base? A supply limit of a dot base is 5K?. That leaves a cap on the amount of supply delivered??

The supply cap is a value that can be set for each individual base in the editor.

I haven't touched stock scenarios in years, but IIRC most bases outside the monsoon area do not have supply caps, but most bases in the monsoon area have them.

Here is an example from my mod: Mandalay has a supply cap of 500 in the editor, it has a combined airbase/port/fort size of 3, hence the "max draw" for supplies is 500 x 3 = 1500 per turn.

Even if the supply path to Mandalay could in theory push more supplies to that base, only 1500 per day will be accepted.

During monsoon, this is halved to 750 per turn.

Now, dot bases who have a supply cap set in the editor, but have no forts (obviously they have no airbase and no ports), would have a supply cap caluclation of "cap x 0",which is 0. In that case, the game applies a default supply cap of 1000.
So it can happen that a unit sits in a dot base which can draw up to 1000 supplies a day, then the unit builds a fort level - and the cap kicks in and daily draw is limited to whatever the supply cap in the editor has been set to.
If it is say 100, the daily draw drops from 1000 to 100 x 1 = 100. Oops...

Thanks for that. Not sure why I missed that supply limit.

So just to confirm, bases in the Monsoon area use a different delivery system to the rest of the map based on this supply limit.

All other bases use the standard Supply path rules.

Supply caps can be set anywhere on the map as well as monsoon affects.

I dare say but that doesn't answer my last question. Do they replace the normal supply path rules, actually they must otherwise it won't work, but I'd like confirmation.

It is different only in the sense that bases without supply caps could in theory receive an unlimited amount of supplies per turn while bases with supply caps can only receive up to the supply cap limit (and half of that during monsoon). But the basic mechanics of supply and demand, distance and push probability remain the same.
