Definition of "No CV Hunting."
I've played the game several times as either side, but only within my friend circle. I have only recently begun trying to find opponents here and on Discord. In the campaigns in which I have played the Allies I have sent both US Carrier groups southwest away from Pearl Harbor the first couple of days and never had a problem. One of the most prevalent House Rules I've seen here is "No CV Hunting." And I am curious how people define that term.
I recently started a campaign as the Japanese and Kido Butai hung around PH for an extra day to try a second hit on PH, then on December 9 started West to support the Wake Island group, by the shortest route possible. On December 11 Kido was southwest of Laysan Island and spotted both American Carrier groups between Laysan and French Frigate Shoals. Needless to say it was not pretty for the Americans.
I was accused of "CV Hunting."
It seems to me that the Allied player has to take some responsibility for keeping the CVs away from PH the first few days until it is clear that the Japanese have left the vicinity.
How do players handle this rule?

That hr is used to keep the Japanese player from intentionally hunting the USN CV'S. Your opponent made the mistake, not you....GP

Re: Definition of "No CV Hunting."
That is a very interesting question. It is based upon the fact that the Japanese player knows exactly where the two deployed US carriers are. This obviously was not known to the real Japanese thus the house rule. The same is true for the British HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse. However, the British have the ability to move their ships out-of-the-way easily, this is not true for the American CVs. It is related to the KB's ability to move vast distances in the Pearl Harbor direction on turn one. Due is this; the house rule. In my experience that rule will only last for the first turn. After that all bets are off. And in fact, if looking back at history it was a near thing that the Jap carriers sent to aid/support the second Wake island invasion nearly caught an American CV attempting to reinforce that island. It was recalled by the acting admiral (KImmel being relieved) in Pearl Harbor but if it had not been recalled, a battle may have taken place and the outcome might have been catastrophic for the American fleet. So in a sense you are correct that after the first turn the Allied player must take care to avoid catastrophe. I don't know of players keeping this rule active after the first time.
Re: Definition of "No CV Hunting."
Yea, you don't want to meet all 6 IJN CVs in 1941...you actually don't want to meet all 6 in 1942 either...
Only in 1943, you start to be on equal level with numbers.

I attempted to delete the duplicate post, but it did not delete.
Re: Definition of "No CV Hunting."
I understand the reason for the rule, my question was more about the implementation thereof.
Re: Definition of "No CV Hunting."
That you don't go after US CVs on second turn (if playing with historical first turn, when allies cannot issue orders), since you know where they are, but let them plot their escape.Honus wrote: Fri Jun 05, 2026 10:01 pm I understand the reason for the rule, my question was more about the implementation thereof.

Re: Definition of "No CV Hunting."
Ok sorry for the long winded response then! My direct resoponse is contained in the last two setances of my first post. We all play with far more knowledge about the oppposition than the actual war participants had, so I guess it depends upon when and how you use that information to impact game play.Honus wrote: Fri Jun 05, 2026 10:01 pm I understand the reason for the rule, my question was more about the implementation thereof.
Re: Definition of "No CV Hunting."
Lets just make this rule for the whole of 1942
And Allies have an even happier 43
And @OP: If u didnt understand the rules of your game, you could have ---- asked your oppponent

And not ask AFTER the fact in a forum, just a weird idea from me I guess
Cuz now "the damage is done"

Re: Definition of "No CV Hunting."
Based upon the few responses here that actually answered the question I asked, it would appear that I did indeed understand the rules, but thank you so much for your insightful response.

Re: Definition of "No CV Hunting."
Yeah I am always insightful
Esp when it comes to talking with fellow gamers eg about rules that someone might not understand correctly

You cannot delete the post itself but you can delete all the original text (Select Edit Post, highlight the text and hit the delete button) and replace it with "Deleted - duplicate post". That will keep readers from answering your question in two places.

Re: Definition of "No CV Hunting."
Actually, you can now, if it is soon enough. I do it at least once a week ... I can't tell if there is a time limit to the delete or if it is before the first response. Anyway, I have deleted them at least 15 mins after I posted. When you delete, you have to give a reason ... mine is stored: "duplicate post"
See the "x" in the menu ... it stays for a bit and while you have it you can delete.

Thank you Pax. When I read BB's post, I knew that it didn't ring right for me but I was in the car and didn't have access to my computer and have a difficult time typing in the carPaxMondo wrote: Sun Jun 07, 2026 2:45 amActually, you can now, if it is soon enough.
