Defense Value vs. Defense Bonus

Post by Feinder »

On a unit (ex AAA), I understand the Defense Value of "This is my defense if I'm attacked by [Soft, Hard, Artillery... etc].

The part that is muddy for me is the Terrain modifiers.
If this AAA unit is in the Fortified Town,

1. What's the difference between Defense Bonus vs. Defense Value?
2. Does Defense Value basically get added to the Defense Value of the resident Unit?
3. What does the Defense Bonus do then?
4. For all terrain types that I've looked at, AAA is always Zero for both Defense Value and Defense Bonus. Does AAA just not get anything from terrain?

Defense Values are what the resource (fortress, port etc) gets. Most land units don't damage resources, so it is generally 0. It is applied when an attacker has a Resource attack value (SBs).
Defense Bonus is what units inside the resource get. p. 172 of the manual.

Ah! That makes sense!

I hadn't thought observed the DV was for the town/resource.

So when I comparing a town in a Mountain vs. a Mountain hex (with no town), there is no "defense values", as they attributed to the Resource.

The Defense values are that of the Resource, to defend against Bombers or Artillery or whatever. Got it, thank you!

And then "Defense Bonus" (in the example above) would be the +whatever that the unit receives for being in the Mountain, depending on its type.

I suppose it's odd that AAA doesn't get any defense bonus (in pretty much any terrain that I've checked, it's zero). I'd have thought it would be a "1" like Artillery or whatever. But whatever.

Thanks for pointing out the difference El_Condoro!

I believe the defense bonus shown is the amount of bonus against the given unit type. So the 0 for AA implies there is no defense bonus against AA attacking a unit in that terrain. However, if an AA unit is defending in the terrain, it would still receive a defense bonus against the respective attacking unit type, such as +3 against Tank or +1 against Bomber/Carrier. Hope that helps (and that I'm not mistaken lol).

So DB in given terrain is against that TYPE of ATTACKER.

Ok that makes sense. As AAA cannot attack, a unit defending in the given terrain gets zero def bonus because it doesnt matter. But any unit, defending against a tank in that fortified town gets a +3 bonus.

Thanks all! 👍

That's right. Terrain does give defense bonuses without a resource, though. This is by unit type, so for mountains, units in a mountain hex receive +3 bonus against soft and hard attacks, and +4 against tank attacks. In swamps, some units will actually lose defense because the 'bonus' is -1 (artillery and air attacks).

Also, in some older post, Bill or Hubert said that AA upgrades of ressources only count fully, when the hex is not occupied by a unit.
If it is occupied, the bonus AA defense is halved by 50%.
So you if you want to harden your units on ressources, cities or harbours vs air attacks, the 1, 3 and 5 AA upgrades are useless.
