OT World Cup
Can't believe no one has mentioned it yet.
It's hard for me to follow the games live since they are played at an ungodly hour.
Impressions so far
-USA got a strong start
- Brazil, not impressive at all
- Don't play South Africa without brass knuckles

Re: OT World Cup
I've tried to feel some enthusiasm about it, but failed for some time. That so many matches will be played in the middle of the night did not help.
However, I went up at 4 AM to watch Sweden and they had a surprisingly solid effort and that help some. Although I have doubts that the Swedish defence will be strong enough against more solid teams.
Still, I doubt that I watch more than a few games that are played during the night.

There was hilarious sign held by US supporter in USA - Australia match:

Saw that too. The idea is fine, since that stuff is an acquired taste.Sardaukar wrote: Sat Jun 20, 2026 8:16 am There was hilarious sign held by US supporter in USA - Australia match:

Just back from a vacation tour with many Aussies, One of them gave me a tiny flat packet of vegemite and told me it would do four pieces of toast, and that most people slather too much on and can't handle the taste for that reason.Sardaukar wrote: Sat Jun 20, 2026 8:16 am There was hilarious sign held by US supporter in USA - Australia match:

I think it's an Aussie secret weapon to control the number of visitors to their country ...

Re: OT World Cup
Here in the USA, we have learned the following: NO SCOTLAND, NO PARTY. We also learned to place traffic cones on statues while being invaded by William Wallace's army. All jokes aside, it's been a pleasure hosting the World Cup 2026.

Re: OT World Cup
I imagine that other countries are not going to be knocking down the door to play friendlies with Paraguay after the horrible display of un-sportsmanship.
And now, we get some politics involved in the decision to make the US red card forward available to play for the next match.
An interesting turn of events.

Yes it's political as was that peace award given before the start of the world cup to one of the most unpeaceful men on the planet.
Re: OT World Cup
I can understand the motivation of some people to want the US red card cancelled so their best player can play - but the FIFA officials should not have caved to the request/demand unless there was clear evidence the call was wrong. Whatever happens the outcome will be tainted in history.

Re: OT World Cup
One of the worst outcomes could be that if USA plays that red card player, CAS (https://www.tas-cas.org/) aka The Court of Arbitration for Sport can reverse the result if USA wins...for having non-eligible player on field...

Re: OT World Cup
In my mind, the USA team's legitimacy was corrupted not when Balogun's red card was rescinded but when Balogun chose to take the field.
By declining to play and putting the game above himself, he could have sealed his reputation - win or lose against Belgium. Point is moot now.
What should be the fate of a certain Gianni Infantino? Red card.
