Full image database causing crash to desktop

Downloading the most recent database image pack from the CMO downloads page seems to result in a behavior where the game exits immediately after loading any scenario. this behavior does not occur and the game operates normally if I delete the database folder and then re-validate files through steam. any help is much appreciated
