Things may be getting more interesting up in Alaska! The most recent ground attack went in at Agattu, after a bombardment, KB ground strike, and land 2E striks from Attu. Looks like the IJA got a bad roll, but still took no casualties! The prior KB grounds strike resulted in 24 squads disabled, so I think the Americans are on the ropes.

One interesting note is the sighting of an Avenger to the east. Maybe the Allies are coming to reinforce Adak? KB is moving to intercept, and will be tasked with Naval attack only. KB is also escorting a large number of AKs that need to drop supplies at Amchitka, which is running low (overstacked there with 2 divisions). Once Agattu falls, LBA will start softening up Amchitka further. Adak invasion force is off of HI now.

The Captain rushed into the central plotting room from the nearby radio center, "Admiral Harmasaki, good news to report! Agattu has fallen. Another glorious win for the Imperial Army and Navy Sir!" With that report, the Captain waited for cheers from the room, but was disappointed, as the good Admiral merely shook his head and and said, "about time..., we are well beyond the current schedule and need to wrap up this counterattack before the allies strike further, elsewhere. The KB should not be playing nursemaid, but should be a sword to slay our foes. But nevermind, let me see the final combat report."

The 52nd Division will be withdrawn, and several airbases landed, along with a Naval HQ and port units to help supply ships. It would be very helpful to resupply DD's due to the constant PT boat menace in the Alaskan waters. I do not know the allied OB, and purposely do not look or try to count units. I expect the allies get about three million base forces, but do think losing the number of engineers he just lost will at least cause a bit of inconvenience.
A bombardment was laid into amchitka from a BB TF, and aerial attacks will now commence every day. Also another direct attack was ordered. Likely will be bloody but need to really begin to whittle away at Amchitka as that stupid coastal defense unit is chewing up AK that are trying to land supplies. Current count is ~12 AKs sunk.... good grief!

Quick update before a more comprehensive one in a bit. Over the last two days, I have had back to back deliberate attacks on Amchitka, the first one was right after a BB led bombardment with Sallys hitting the ground units in the day. I got a 1-1 result, so was feeling a bit saucy and ordered another attack the next day. The following attack, also preceded by air attacks (but not a bombardment), ended up with a 1-2 result. Here is the second attack.

----------------------
March 7, 1943

Ground combat at Amchitka Island (158,52)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 18937 troops, 221 guns, 204 vehicles, Assault Value = 554

Defending force 7334 troops, 211 guns, 187 vehicles, Assault Value = 114

Japanese adjusted assault: 228

Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 21 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Guns lost 7 (2 destroyed, 5 disabled)
Vehicles lost 41 (31 destroyed, 10 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
267 casualties reported
Squads: 4 destroyed, 31 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 9 disabled

Assaulting units:
54th Division
8th Tank Regiment
4th Tank Regiment
53rd Division
56th Recon Regiment
23rd Ind. Engineer Regiment
2nd Recon Regiment
82nd Naval Guard Unit

Defending units:
4th (Sep) Infantry Regiment
151st Combat Engr Rgt /1
154th FA Bn
112th USA Base Force
95th Coast AA Regiment
57th Coastal Artillery Regiment
808th Engineer Aviation Battalion
-----------------------
Lesson here, is to wait until I can hit him with another BB led bombardment, then will shock attack. In the meantime, keep up the aerial attacks to increase disruption and attrition on his single Infantry Regiment.

No Kidding! And the quartermaster forgot to pack it on the follow on transports! But all is not lost, at least not yet.... The invasion of Adak will land in a couple days. Currently I have 2 BB bombardment TFs that will support, and both KB and Mini KB are in the area. Initial recon has the allies with only a couple base forces and a single rgmt of infantry at the base. Stay tuned gentle readers...

Once again, Admiral Wa is getting frisky! I think at least 3 CVs are in the area east of Alaska. Only got a small sighting from a Glen, but two separate strike from torpedo wielding Avengers were sent against my CL/DD TF that has been hunting LCT and PT boats. Each strike was three sets of either 7 or 8 planes, totaling 24 and 22 in each strike. My guess is he forgot to put the off Naval Strike as he was sneaking up on me. Thank goodness for small mistakes as KB and Mini KB had been softening up Adak for the landing tomorrow. I would not be surprised if he brought everything, and I only see the one TF. The IJA will just have to wade ashore without Naval plane support, as there are bigger prizes out there!

I expect his Subs will head east to catch KB if I head towards him (which was tempting). I think discretion is the better part of valor here as I want to combing KB with Mini KB first. In our previous game, he caught mini KB by itself in late '42 and squished it. Trying not to make the same mistakes twice!! Hopefully I will transit the subs without eating a fish.

Have DD's in the CVTF, but also at least 1 group of 3DD in an ASW TF. Set the ASW TF to follow the CVTF, and have some of the Bombers on ASW/NavSearch. Not perfect, but increases your chances ... if you have a CS, put that to follow the CVTF and at least 50% of the Jakes on ASW ... the rest on NavSearch.

PaxMondo, good advice! Turn just processed, and no nasty subs were around. No Allied CVs showed up, and the seas seemed to be clear except for the perpetual PT boats. That is the good news, bad news is I forgot to set the invasion force to unload! Yes, I have had a long talk with the staff officer in charge of that, and that mistake will not be made again. Adm Wa did send in more PT boats and I lost a AK overnight, in exchange for 5 PT boats sunk. So no fireworks in the Bering Sea yet...

Over in China, things have moved slowly but there may be some progress in the next week. I got a 1-1 result in Tsuyung, and dropped the forts to 1. Will continue to ground attack them with Sallys, and will put in a shock attack in 2 days. By then my unit in Kumning will have moved back out. I had moved him in, to give Adm Wa something to think about and have him think I was going to attack both cities at once, but I really want to herd as much Chinese units to Kumning if I can.

I would suggest rebuilding units in the HI ... they will rebuild a LOT faster. Kobe/Osaka is pretty good. You want a as many built up bases in a circumference as possible. The closer, the better. Think as many lvl 9 AB + Ports within 2 hexes as possible.

It has been a slow week gentle readers, Adm Wa was out visiting grandkids and with him recently back, I will be headed out to visit family as well. That said, things are heating up! The last turn I was able to finally close the road north of Kunming. A shock attack did the trick and his units retreated back to Kunming. I am following up and once more with the goal of herding the local Chinese forces for a final stand in Kunming. This is happening none too soon as Adm Wa is making a concerted effort to open up the burma road again. He has a significant force that just moved in East of Lashio: Here is the latest ground combat there. Good to know where these allied LCUs are. 2 Aus Divisions, the Americal Division and a chindit bdge were also recently seen in Ceylon finishing off my rearguard.

This is a big deal. You want to keep track of where the US ID's are located. The US actually doesn't get all that many, but they are VERY powerful as compared to the IJ ID's. Essentially, one strategy is to lure as many US ID's to India, as they are then NOT available for amphib ops. Walking from Calcutta to Tokyo is FAR SLOWER than leapfrogging islands.

If you go with this strategy, you main focus is NOT to let your units get caught in Malaysia ... or better to say, only the units you have determined are expendable will be caught, but the bulk of your key forces escape across China.

PaxMondo, agree and that is one of the reasons I am happy for him to be fighting in India. Admiral Wa was very good in the initial battles in India and stopped my Calcutta attack. It was a close run thing, but now I think he has quite a few land units in the theatre there which is a long way from anywhere else. As you said, I do need to not get my troops cut off, especially a landing down near Singapore area or south of Rangoon. He is finishing up Ceylon now, so will likely be ready for another invasion in a month or so. In tandem, Adm Wa is pushing in the in the hinterlands of Burma. Good news there though! As expected, he put in a shock attack just east of Lashio this turn, and my second division arrived in the nick of time! See map above. Results were satisfactory with his tanks taking it on the chin ... :-) :-)

I have another division hoping to move behind this attack group, long shot that he lets me bag them but worth a chance!

March 16th, 1943, Imperial HQ, Toyko Japan:

Admiral Harmasaki strides into the planning room and looks again at the North Pacific Map. This has been the ritual for the past 6 weeks, ever since the initial Japanese forces stormed ashore in the second week of February. With the quick USN response stymied by the crippling of the USS Wasp, the Allies had reverted to mainly a submarine and PT boat defense. The quick victories at Attu Island followed by Agattu Island have been offset by the determined defense at Amchitka island. In particular, the forever cursed 57th Coastal Artillery Regiment of the US Army has sunk many innocent transport ships of the gallant INJ. The crowded nature of the Amchitka battle has caused significant casualties, and the battle may very well continue for another month.

All this goes through the good Admiral's mind. Enough to cause a bit of doubt in the initial plans. However, a ray of sunshine has broken through his thoughts as he rereads the combat report from the first shock attack at Adak Island. Adak is the key, a huge base and linchpin to the allied defenses. With a size 8 port and size 7 airfield, already built up, it will allow replenishment of ships and a solid airfield to contest any counterattack by the allies. Everything was planned to support the IJA forces on the island. Two separate bombardments were placed, and land attack strikes from both Attu and the KB were ordered. The land attacks failed to fly due to weather, but overall the results were good!

Admiral Harmasaki turns to his chief of staff... "Order a second Shock Attack at once! Tell LGen Hitomi to push! Push hard while they are disorganized! A night Banzai may just break them, and if Adak is ours, the North Pacific is ours!"

As his staff jump into action, he steps back to the map. Yes, if Adak falls, the North Pacific will be ours... but for how long? How long indeed. Even now, spies have reported that newer, larger carriers are being built far from the reach of the Imperial Navy.

Yeah baby!! 74 destroyed, not all of them tanks of course, figure 50% AFV/50%MotSupp, still, that is several months of production. A couple more results like that and his US armor is trashed for some time.

Admiral Harmasaki turns to his chief of staff... "Order a second Shock Attack at once! Tell LGen Hitomi to push! Push hard while they are disorganized! A night Banzai may just break them, and if Adak is ours, the North Pacific is ours!"
Big gamble ... you're right, and this is why you're paid the BIG bucks!!!!

As the good Admiral strides into the room after a fitful nap, the senior communication officer approaches. "Sir, we have just received word from LGen Hitomi! The Banzai was successful! Adak is ours! Just as you foresaw! Here is the battle summary!"

"Excellent Captain!, however I did not foresee the result, just had a feeling that one hard push may be enough." the Admiral gently admonished the officer, "Now we need to begin to rebuild the base, prepare to station our Naval torpedo formations there, and develop a defensive strategy there as the Allies will return. Also do not forget that they still hold Amchitka, which until it is reduced, can be a thorn. That is why I have ordered a shock attack there as well. KB will withdraw to the Home Islands, along with the surface units. My nemesis, Admiral Wa is way too cagey an Admiral to sit idle while we have been out of position for so long."

Quick update gentle readers, the most recent shock attack went in at Amchitka, and results were promising! Forts dropped from 2 to 1, and the Brave IJA achieved a 1-1 result. One final bombardment has been laid on, and additional strikes from land based air have been ordered, as well as a parting carrier strike from the KB as it exits the area... all to support a final Shock attack! After this attack, the troops will need quite the rest and refit.

Amchitka has been the hardest nut by far. The coastal defense rgmt, combined with the AA rgmt and attemting a landing in February, have all hurt! But Banzai!

Things are heating up in the North Pacific, unfortunately the KB and mini KB are out of aviation gas and bombs (~30-35%). Also most of the surface TFs are heading back to the barn for shells, and I don't have Adak repaired... Of course Admiral Wa chose this time to finally come a calling up north. Thankfully Ms. Emily saw the visitors before they got on the front lawn and has alerted the neighborhood watch.

I will try one final shock attack at Amchitka (last one was another 1-1 but forts dropped again and are now at 0. A final bombardment will also hit the island before retiring back to the HI. Another week, and I would have had Adak mostly operational. Now likely it will take quite a while as I will need the KB and friends to all refurbish and return, then repair the base. I expect Adm Wa to terrorize the neighborhood in the meantime!

I don't think he will land troops to retake Adak so quickly and knowing the KB was around, but I could be wrong. Thank would be interesting! :-)
