GC41: Kamil (Ger) vs Dodo98 (Sov)

Post by KamilS »

New GC41 campaign.

Rules:
  • No Motorisation
    Open Theatre Boxes
Early Morale increase for Axis allies, and late for all Axis.

Plan
I intended to be oportunistic. During first few turn I wanted to maximise land grab and after turns 5-7 I intended to shift focus towards weaking Soviet armies through combination of encirclements and deliberate attacks.

Turn 1 End 1/1

North

Advancing as fast a possible towards Vitebsk and Smolensk to keep options open for future turns.

I have removed 3.5 mobile divisions and assigned them to AGS. It won't matter during 1st turn but it will obvisouly have repercusions in future.

South

I wanted to kill 3 birds with one stone: Rovno pocket, capturing lines of forts east of Tarnopol and flanking Soviet forces in Lvov area.
Obisously I haven't managed to do it, but assigning extra forces from AGC helped to semi achieve 2nd and 3rd objective will securing semi-decent Rovno pocket.

I have praticed firts turn for several days and in the end I was happy with my results.
(I was happy relative to my skill level as available AARs show the it could be done much better)

Turn 2 End 1/2

Infantry is so far behind that I was not able to achieve anything beyond crossing Velkyaya river.

In the center, due to partial transfer of panzer forces to AGS only 1 advance axis is possible.
Fortunatelly I was able to take advantage of Soviet's uncertainity in regard to my next move and pushed beyond Dnepr River.

Predictably, minor size (from number of units perspective) Lvov pocket was created. Other than that as in the case of other areas I have focused on advancing as fast as possible.
To improve balance I have assigned previsouly frozen mobile units to AGS (all, or at least most, i don't remember now).

Turn 3 End 1/2

I really disn't distinguished myself with maneuvering near Riga. It is turn number 3, city has not fallen and I have 4 divisions there ...
Not having enough support from infantry gave me extra incentive to widen attack front and push towards Velkie Luki. Soviet defences are still weak so I can still advance at reasonable pace despite very tough terrain.

Very positive surprise here. I was able to create sizable pocket and advance north east reaching Kiev.
I didn't expect that and it obviously came at the expense of everything else, but I am happy with such outcome.

Panzer are separated into 2 groups limiting their impact. Effects are predictable, advance is slow, arrival of infantry will help but Soviet defence will onlt get stronger so in the end turns turns 3-4 might be decisive.

Infantry is gradually coming into action, simultaneusly combined 2 panzer groups created wide corridor south from Smolensk. It will force my opponent to make adjustments.

Further south progress is slow as it was expected.

Pocket was almost cleared and fast advance was resumed.
Unfortunatelly due to alreay not ideal supply situation and not the best maneuvering I wasn't able encircle Soviet forces south east from Kiev.

Advance in Pskov area slew down to 1 hex. It is safe to say that Leningrad will be beyond my reach.
Slightly better situation in Velkie Luki. Terrain is more challenging, but I have more troops and railrepair unit is not far behind.

I breach Dnepr river near Kiev, but more importantly I have pushed hard towards Zaporoze while creating small encirclement just south of main offensive line.

As expected, I have achieved only minimal success near Pskov, hoever much better situation near Velkie Luki-Smolensk.

Part of 1pz Group pushed beyond swaps sealing pocket that was created by AGC. It should open up road to Moscow.

Big success. Soviet units in Smolensk area were encircled and infantry is close enough to clean most of it next turn.

I have managed to capture both Dnepropetrovsk and Zaporozhye, additionally I have crossed secured river crossing.

When I was planning my general strategy I wanted to push as fast as possible to create dillema for Soviet player - defend industry or face threat of encirclement.

Unfortunatelly it is really not dillema as all major industrial centers will just relocate and after after brief period produce again. There is no realy incentive to defend anything else than Leningrad and Moscow. I have learned it around turn 8-9.
It really annoyed me to the extend that I have decided that after finishing this game I won't be playing WitE 2. (I apologise for small rant, but it really made me angry ...)

Please don't quit Wite 2 after our game :D
You are a good player, keeping me constantly under pressure and forcing me to adjust my strategy constantly. Your hard push toward the Donets Basin definitely surprised me a bit. And your early capture of those cities will have an impact on my production. While it's true, that industry cannot be permanently destroyed, your push will delay important production lines for several weeks.

Not sure what the big issue is with the factory evacuations. The IRL Soviets managed to get pretty much everything out before the Axis reached the cities. But it wasn't like one day the industry was there and the next day it had left - it was a gradual process. So if the Axis player outperforms their real life counterpart then more industry will be lost than historical but at least some of the industry will already have been moved (plus the Soviets obviously had the capability to rebuild anything they lost given time). So the in game situation (capturing cities ahead of the evacuation date will cause a delay in the factories getting back online compared to historical) matches the real life situation.

In terms of the separate wider issue of the Soviet player not being under pressure to defend forward...
1) A human player is very unlikely to make the same mistakes as the historical STAVKA and keep huge numbers of forces forwards to be inevitably encircled. A rule system that basically handcuffs the Soviet player and forces them to suicide their troops is not going to be enjoyable to play.
2) In terms of the victory rules a Soviet player that just retreats and does not attack is only saving themselves from the 1941 auto-victory and potentially the 1942 one. But in the long term it is a losing strategy. If the Soviet player gives up too many bonus points by losing too many cities ahead of their historical capture date they will allow the Axis player to set a High Watermark that might not auto win the game in 1942 but will be impossible for the Soviet player to match by the end of 1944, resulting in an Axis victory.
3) In terms of the balance of forces, again a Soviet player that just retreats and does not fight will face longer terms consequences that outweigh the short term benefits. If they don't fight, the Axis forces will remain in good condition right up to the winter and so will be at no risk of collapsing if they do not retreat. In order to put them in that crisis situation the Soviet player needs to be defending aggressively enough to wear the Axis forces down before winter hits. Being able to put the Axis player under pressure in the winter is important not just from the perspective of causing damage to the Axis forces but also from the perspective of getting experience/morale and in particular Guards promotions.

Thank you for reply

In regards to industry - I disagree. Impact on Soviet industrial output in the long run is minimal.

1) I have played both sides and I agree balance is hard to find, however I think more agressive Soviet defending is not incentied enough in my opinion

2) I haven't anallised it from VP perspective, but I believe minimising losses ant expense of significant terrain loss during doesn't have meaningfull drawbacks.

3) From my expericen. I have fought Germans very intensivelly over the course of summer nad lost very little terrain as a consequence army was to weak to conduct counteroffensive.

My experience is limited so I might be wrong, additionally I am happy to be criticised :)
