Anyone else ever make a complete mess of their Task Forces?

Post by davidbaggins »

Please tell me I'm not the only one who's done this in War in the Pacific - Admiral's Edition. I had a big convoy unloading at Pearl Harbor and was trying to move a few escorts around before ending the turn. I clicked a little too fast and somehow disbanded the entire transport TF into the port instead of moving one ship. I didn't even realize what I'd done until the next turn. Half the ships were sitting idle, the escorts had ended up attached to different task forces, and I couldn't remember which transports were supposed to be heading to Australia. I spent way longer than I want to admit trying to put everything back together. Do you guys have any tricks for keeping large numbers of TFs organized? Do you rename everything, keep a spreadsheet, or is this just one of those mistakes everyone makes once?

The problem was that the Disband TF item was right above the one for transferring ships between TFs or to/from port. More recent versions of the game have made the Disband order a keyboard Y/N confirmation item to ensure you really mean it.
I always try to rename my transport TFs with a short version of the LCU/ACU name/type and intended destination (not necessarily where it will unload, but where it will be stationed). Use numbers 2 and 4 as shorthand for 'to' and 'for'.
e.g. 7th Mar Rgt 2 Syd(ney) 4 Bbane (Brisbane) - means that Marine regiment will go to Sydney Australia and travel overland to Brisbane. If it goes in Strategic mode (Transport TF) it can get off the ship and just hop the train to Brisbane.

PS - some players split their TFs and send them by different routes on different days so a sub or raiding Carrier TF don't kill the entire unit in one attack. Unit fragments can rebuild with better Experience numbers than a resurrected dead unit.
