Easy WWII Game Recommendation

Post by Javidor »

Greetings all,

I'm 61 years old and grew up playing Avalon Hill WWII board games. I am trying to find an approachable game and a comparable game from Slitherine/Matrix. I have played games like Order of Battle, Panzer Corps 2, Commander: The Great War, and Unity of Command, and they are great.

I bought several games in the Strategic Command series but am struggling with them.

Any recommendations?
Thanks

STRATEGIC COMMAND War in Europe (SC3) is a great game, but it has now more complexity and it's no more a "simple game" like Strategic command 1 (SC1) was : in short terms, SC3 is more rich game than SC1, with heavy depth, but games are also more longer, you need more time to play it.

If you prefer WW2 Games more simpler, see :

1/ Strategic Command 1, in a "Avallon Hill Third Reich look" (I made a special mod for that)
This game may be bougth on GOG GAMES for less than 10 euro.

The look of the vanilla game is really "old", but I had made a special Third Reich mod to improve it (inspired by the Avallon Hill game "Third Reich", a classic)

Hubert thinks that this game is almost dead, but it's absolutly not my opinion : it's the ideal WW2 game when you have only some hours to play the entire campaign

I play and I mod now essentially SC3, but each year I play again a campaign of SC1 with the same original fun like in years 2002 (date of the game). In addition, I have collected/saved all old scenarios for SC1 players had created for the game.

SC1 is really a great old game, and in my opinion, Hubert should consider one day to reactive it as "simple WW2 game", with a added map editor

You could also consider COMMANDER EUROPE AT WAR :

Hubert Cater, author of SC1 and SC3 is working about a new version of this old WW2 game
In termes of complexity, the order is :
1- SC3 = more complexity
2- Commander Europe at war = Medium complexity
3- SC1 = Low complexity (but great fun despite the age of this very old game :P )
And you can play entire WW2 in one or two session (vs AI or human player).
AI of SC1 is good, but SC1 against human player is really very fun

I remember a old game in SC1, where I played as Allied Vs an experimented player, and this vicious opponent  had moved naval transports + escort to coasts of Norway before any declaration of war to Norway (secret preparation I had not detected). As General Gamelin, I was scandalized by this infamous nazi process

The link to the 3r mod is broken. Is there someplace else to download it from?

Thanks

New link was added in previous post and here :

The mod allow to play SC1 in a "Third Reich Avallon Hill PC game" ambiance (but with a little bit more modern
interface  )

All informations, downolad links, fan sites links, etc concerning Strategic Command 1 are here :

If you search a WW2 game with simple but very funn mechanisms, Strategic Command 1 is a excellent introduction to the actual modern version (Strategic Command "3" - War in Europe, that is more complete, with a very powerfull editor that allows to create anythings you want)
