Historical Games

Post by sophia2005 »

For those who enjoy historical strategy games, which Matrix Games title do you think does the best job of making historical events feel authentic without sacrificing gameplay? I’m especially interested in games where the historical details actually influence your decisions rather than just providing background flavor.

There are several that capture the history fairly well. As for gameplay, that is a matter of taste. I find the AGEOD Roman series AJE to be a fairly good representation of the Roman period. There are historical events and decisions that are well researched and help to provide the sense of immersion. Other AGEOD titles are done equally well. As for playability, that largely depends on your background, I find they are quite playable but YMMV.

The various Gary Grigsby titles are also very detailed. Though they tend to be monster games that have a steep initial learning curve. Once you get past that you'll find a very loyal cadre of players for each of those titles.
