The World at War ELO Tournament

Following up on the discussion above. Concerns were raised that a few of my recent opponents didn't realize their games were being counted toward the ELO rankings. Having looked into it, that's fair: I set those games up under "ELO match rules," but it's clear not everyone read that as a tracked ELO match and I should have been explicit. That's on me, not on them.

I've exchanged PMs with firsteds and I fully support how he's handling the rankings. Going forward I'll keep a clear, screenshotted confirmation that an opponent knows the game counts before I post any result, so there's no ambiguity for anyone.

Agree with Harry’s post and I'd rather spend my time on the map than in threads like this one. Looking forward to getting back to the game.

The next rankings will come out around September 1. Remember to post any results here.

Regarding the recent issue, TH11 will be starting again from scratch and all his prior games will be scratched from the rankings. Players may see some small changes as a result of this.

This is good to read. But why are you averse to posting open challenges on the Forum like the rest of us? You'll get a committed opponent who knows the ELO rules.

This was the original pitch for ELO games:

ELO players are part of a community who are committed to playing the game through to a conclusion, typically playing at least a turn a day, in a spirit of good sportsmanship.

It would be great if you were to embrace that please.

If we want to grow the community long term, then we must develop trust with non=ELO gamers, starting with making sure they are aware of the forum (and the resources available - AARs, War Room) and rating system. Then they can make a more thoughtful decision on how to engage with the community.

I do the above by getting them to Matrix Games and then PMing info and links, trying to make them feel comfortable with everything before jumping into the shark infested waters. Like everything, first impressions matter. Cheap wins should be avoided, more durable engagement promoted.

Game ends December 1944 with allies décisive victory.

Germany not go in NA and make all in on Russia. The Wehrmacht failed to secure its breakthroughs on the left bank of the Don and could not reach the Caucasus oil fields. Japan gave China a hard time; the Chinese were forced back again and again but avoided conquest thanks to support from Indian ground forces and US aircraft.
The outcome remained undecided until 1943. Thanks to Old_Shane for a great game.

Berlin occupied and Germany surrendered March 1944. Italy surrendered December 1943. Japan morale down to 21% and aquavita resigned.

My thanks to aquavita for my first ELO game and for playing regularly until Germany was overrun.
