Help with early game

Post by jungy »

I've been playing distant worlds 2 off and on for years, and never gotten super far in.

Most recently I've noticed all my starts seem to be hampered by pirates like immediately. I'll usually start with two pirates in the same system as me, and at best only one will likely be willing to talk to me.
So I'm finding I have time to research pre-warp experiments, and then 2-3 techs before they show up. That means I have escorts at best, usually about 30 strength, if I rush down shields, armor, and possibly improved escorts before anything else.

I've been trying to play the more aggressive factions from the get-go to get better at combat but it's felt pretty insurmountable to even hold on. I've lost a game or so already when raiding dropped my happiness so badly I lost my only planet.

Do you just have to accept getting wailed on, or is there some way to mount a proper defense in time when it becomes clear you're going to be fighting pirates from the start?

With the new DLC I suspect pirates are going to get harder to deal with rather than easier, so any tips or advice are welcome to prepare. :)

Pay them protection money, or bribe them with gifts and then pay them protection money. Pirate bases in the same system are different, they won't attack, and you will need 8-12 frigates to kill them - escorts are useless. You may be able to work with pirate bases in the system in the dlc.

The problem I've found is often the reputation is so low they won't accept an agreement. Perhaps gifting is the way to go, I just figured I would be giving them money they'd spend on more ships.

if ya meet new pirates the first time they often also send a protection deal right away.
and if you pause before they shot your stuff/stations and before you shoot them... so that no reputation changes into negative... then usually you can accept the protection deal right away.

what is it... 1000 per month i think (i wonder if that costs changes with the next DLC, based on your stuff and pirate stuff.... like strength or how much you have)
so once you get to tech2-3 with weapons and shields with frigates and maybe a few destroyers... like when you got some decent ships you can make...
well usually at some point your ships maintenance outweigh the 1000 pirate protection and at that point you probably can think of canceling it and defending your mining stations with your fleet.

also if you get more friendly with them and ally, that also removes the protection fee then (atleast i am pretty sure it does)

its pretty normal to do some protection deals with a few pirates... maybe leave one group out to fight... as the pirates also shoot eachother when they are at your stations.

I never build escorts. They wont help against early pirates or anything else and they will cost you money, resources and maintenance better used elsewhere. As you said, you have to try and be friends with early pirates. Then later in game when you find where they are you can kill them. I almost always do that, due to petty revenge. I wish there was a spy mission to search for pirates so I could get to the kill point earlier. : )
