Low Element number causes odd FPE & HPE increases - at times

Post by Wiedrock »

There is an oddity in the game (since forever) that elements that have a low quantity perform better or oddly well at times.
Sometimes it is just HPE (Urban example - Urban is special as we know), sometimes both FPE and HPE.

Some examples.

Does sound odd. Is this repeatable from a save? If not, then unless asking AI to figure out what might cause this comes back with an answer, it's going to remain a mystery. There is a way that an element can get multiple shots off if lucky, and there's also a way that an element shot at will shoot back if missed. I don't think the former allows for multiple chances to fire, but maybe. Then again, do these weapons have some big ROF that might cause some anomaly?

new one from an PvP (Server) - names should be AlberN and "simbiosi" (don't know the exact one).

I can't remember it being that pronounced before (I may error) but this level is truely bugged in some way.

Lucky enough it is PBEM.

Save just before the battle near D town (South).
battle setup.rar
(2.13 MiB) Downloaded 9 times

And save where you can see results of that battle:
nonsense after battle.rar
(2.12 MiB) Downloaded 7 times
I am not doing rerolls in PBEM but i already saw a couple battles where this issue appears, so it should be not hard to reproduce.

Ran the battle 8 times, and twice the Ansaldo caused massive loses. In the other battles, I didn't see it listed in the ground elements firing list. I'll add this to the bug list and hope it duplicates as often for Pavel as for me. Thanks.

Created scenario to reproduce with several 1x RDY tanks.

The tank was shot at 3 times. 2 times teh enemy missed, but when the enemy hit (damaged in this case) at 692yards the tank went full survival mode and shot up everything with its MGs!
After that was silence.

Before attack save attached as well as the Log.

Same attack as before.

Which gun is used may depend on the distance...or random.
It 'seems' to be triggered when the last RDY tank gets DAMaged during Gorund Combat Phase.
The closer (at lower distances) then this happens it then shifts the hitting towards more DAM+DES than DIS.

I have a suspicion.
1. The testing shows weird results beginning to happen when all elements of type (all Pz38s, for example) are damaged, but not dead.
2. Damaged elements are no longer in combat, seeing as the manual 23.10.1 "Combat result effects" says: "Damage: Damaged ground elements are out of action and can no longer fire or be fired at."
3. I am taking a guess here, but if all shooting is done per element type (with the number of units of type determining the amount of shots)...
4. And if the element type with 0 ready elements and X damaged ones is not removed from further combat calculations...
5. It still tries to shoot with all available Pz38s (of which there are zero), and this triggers some weird default logic with 9999 damage or something.

Good news. Once we got the most mostly repeatable save, Pavel was able to find the bug. It should be fixed in the next update. It could happen when a certain combination of disruption and damage happened to the last element, while the element attempted to fire. It is probably rare in most games, but it could definitely happen. Thanks for the report and the save.
