Question for Bill about research minor countries

Post by welk »

Please, forget this dummy question...
I had forgotten to check "upgradable" for Hungary in "Advanced research data" windows, I have now the 2 types of transport units (they work with a house rule to be applied by human player, to move or redeploy some no motorized units
I keep the question here, in case of another dummy modder will ask the same

I know that minor countries have no any independant research, and that their research level does depend of the research level of their "parent", ok

But is there a way to be able to display (and to set) the individual level of "manual upgrades" for units of minor countries ?

In my ASL Tactic Command mod, I used Hungary to be "WEHRMACHT TRANSPORT TRUCKS", and I would want to have transport trucks and transport half-tracks. Ordinary, I use the first slot of manual upgrade to change type type of units in the mod, but concerning "hungarn units" (Transport units in the mod), no any individual upgrade level does appear at this time. Is there something I missed or is it impossible to display that ?
(see attached image)

If it is impossible, I will set France in Axis side as "WEHRMACHT TRANSPORT", but I would prefer to not change side of major countries, to avoid possible bugs

EDIT : I did see in default campaigns that it's seems be possible to display individuel upgrade levels fdor units of Minor countries (example : Finland). I certainly missed something, but what ?

Yes, all is ok. thanks. It was my mistake, I did just forget to check "upgradable" in the concerned minor status research.

There are 2 important things to do when we mod countries and I forget frequently to do :
1/ To set minor countries as "upgradable" (in advanced research windows)
2/ To set minor units "attachable" to Major HQ (in country data)

Concerning my mod ASL Tactic Command, I never seen the AI of the game like it plays actually in the mod : giving fire range = 2 hex to motorized and mechanized infantry (to modelize high "mobile combat" capacities) seems galvanize the AI at an incredible level.
And same for tanks, with a range fire of 2 (scale is 1 hex = 500 meters). Strategic Command in a tacic scale is really a complete and totally different new game, you should consider to explore these possibilities in the future (when my mod will be released, you will see your game with a new aspect, it's incredible : AI seem have been made for this scale with medium size maps 8-)

The difficulty I have found with trying to adapt SC to a tactical level is line of sight, and being able to fire through buildings, forests etc. If a unit has a spotting range of 5, they will still see what's on the other side of a building or forest on the same level. Same with firing if they are given a range of 5.

That said, it is possible to do things like increase the spotting range of units in a hill or moutain hex, but I have not found a way to prevent a unit in the middle of a forest being able to see out of it.

Yes, it's a problem. But may be solved like that :

Scale of my ASL Tactic Command mod (in work) is 1 hex = 500 meters
By this way, infantry unit have range fire of 1 hex and the problem of fire trhough terrain does not occur

Arty units are considered to have indirect fire weapons = terrain dos not block fire

Only some infantry units have a range fire = 2 :
* Mot/Mech infantry = to modelize their specific move capacity in combat and the heavy weapons they have
* Snipers = to modelize their special capacity to do "secret move" on the battlefield (whenthey fire at range 2, they are considered to have move to fire and then retreat on their initial hex position)

Concerning spotting : yes, units have view trhough terrains, but I set always the spotting at max 2 or 3, to preserve at maximum fog of war and surprise effects. This spotting capacity may modelize reco soldiers sent by the unit to observe and report.

Tactical adaptation for SC works very fine, AI is excellent on medium size maps and with adapted parameters

Yes, with shorter ranges, the issues I mentioned should not be important. Good luck with your endeavours!
