Build version: v1.3.7.5 Beta (started with v1.3.1.6) + Expansion and all DLCs
Severity: Low
Annoyance factor: Medium
Saved game: Another installment in the ongoing "Refueling follies" series!
Automated explorers do not verify, before going to retrofit, if they have enough fuel to reach the location at which they'll retrofit. Even if there's available refueling points nearby and if the retrofit location is far far away.
To reproduce the problem:
After loading the save, locate the Stellar Rover (using the search function)
Let it scout the system where it's going
Once it has finished, it will want to go retrofit at Karuse 2. It does so with very little fuel left. And doesn't even bother to check if there's a refueling point nearby (there is: at Sukkuru 2 in the Sukkuru system).
If at that point, still with the ship selected, you stop and clear the current mission (retrofit) and then click on the refuel button in the selection panel, it will go refuel at Sukkuru 2 and once filled up, then it will go retrofit at Karuse 2.
That explorer ship is set to auto-scout. The same behavior is likely to occur with other automation modes also. And possibly with other ship roles also.
All ships (and fleets also), before going somewhere to retrofit, should:
- Check if they have enough fuel to reach the retrofit location
- If not, look for the closest refueling point, and refuel there before going for retrofit.
What's the point of having a faster hyperdrive or more advanced reactor if bad fuel management slows down our ships to a crawl ?
