And here, at last, a place he could recongnise.
Seaman first class Ashishi squinted against the rising sun glimmering off Manilla bay, yes, there it was, unmistakeable, Fort Drum.
The 21 year old raised his glasses, and focused in on the rusting fort. The Imperial flag, he decided, looked decidedly tired hanging over it. Just as he was. Just as, he guessed, was everyone on CV Unryu.
Behind him, inside the carriers cramped bridge, Captain Sagaki barked his next helm order, bringing them around behind Amagi, as always, a neat 500metres.
The Bridge, and the bridge wings where Ashishi kept his lookout, were particularily busy this morning. Anyone with just the slightest excuse it seemed had come to admire the view. The flight deck below, too was crowded with its fair share of gawkers.
And why not?
6 Unryu class carriers, Cruiser Suzuya, the Kumo, 9 destroyers in line ahead, decks crowded with aircraft was a a sight to see.
Yamaguchi's hammer they called it
And somewhere behind, Tanaka's fast Kongo's.
And not for the first time Ashishi's heart swells with pride. Its coming, even he can feel it. Time to deal the damn yankees
a blow they will never recover from

At sea

WO Eto sweated. It seemed to him that for the last 2 and a half years thats all he seemed to have done. Sweated in this damn hanger, sweated on that frying pan flight deck, or sweated below decks in Kaga's labryinth of passageways and compartments.
kaga was a good ship, and in his own sailors way, Eto was attached to her very much, but goddam it, surely they could have designed the ventilation better.
But they hadn't, and so the sweat ran freely down his back.

Carefully he bent down, and crouched below the B6N1 bombers wing.
"try again !" he yells to his team mate sitting in the cockpit.
He has to yell, the noise in the hanger is high, 4 hours ago kaga's airgroup has been recovered from its ASW duties, and there is so much to goddam do.
Take this particular bird, perched on wooden struts. Her left main gear actuator had been leaking hydraulic oil, not an ideal situation when attempting to land really, and (sweating as usual) it has just been replaced.
'Hiei!"
The wheel lowers smoothly, locks into place.
Job 16 for the day done. A dozen more at least
The youngster climbs out of the cockpit. he is, as bloody usual, smiling. Irrepresible youth and all that
'Whats next sir?"
WO Eto scratches his head. Did it matter?
He looks down the length of kaga's hanger, looks at the crowded Zeros, the D4Y1 Judys, the B6n1's. Others might not notice it, but 20 years of service allows him to see it.
A crowded hanger yes. A crowded old hanger. Old planes. Tired planes. The bombers, the TBD's, superceded models all of them.
Where were the new models?
Kaga, Hiryu,Soryu, Shokaku, Zuikaku, Taiho, Aoba, 8 DDs sail across yet another featurless sea.
Combined fleets sword.
But privately, WO Eto wonders how blunt it was becoming

At sea

DD Akizuki
LCDR Kizuka climbed wearily up the ladder to the dancing destroyers bridge.
"Morning Engines!"
Captain Minobes boomed as usual across the bridge.
That such a booming voice could eminate from such a small frame never ceased to amaze Kizuka.
'Morning sir"
'problem solved?"
Kizuka grimaced. 'regrettfully no sir, we need a new worm gear for it"
Minobe knods in acknowledgement, the news on the oil pump was not unexpected.
"Never mind, I understand there is an AR ship in manilla, you might get one there"

"I hope so"
There is nothing else to be said. 2 and a half years, so many miles, one was well used to japanese logistics.

Silently the two men contemplate the view about them.
Tanaka has his ships, 4 battlewagons, 6 cruisersin two columns , 9 dd's spread about them.
Both think the same thing.
Where next?
And surely their luck , so strong for so long, must be stretching thin?

"Akagi will sail in 3 days"
'But we are not finished!"

The supervisor stares hard at Fitter first class Ban
""we have done enough to get her to sea, and combat worthy, they want her in 3 days, and in three days they will have
her"
The supervisor relaxes somewhat. "Ban, for the last 90 days all you have done is complain about this bloody ship, well, next week you will be done with her"
Ban smiles too. This was true. Half the bloody war seemed to have been fixing holes on this bloody ship.
"what then?" he asks
"Im not sure, but Im sure we will have need for your skills eleswhere, now finish this job, and get this pigsty cleaned up, remember , they want her in three days"

Ban nods
3 days, for such a damaged ship?. Nobody truly knows the state of the war, but something tells him, this cant be good

Wow, this is great! It's very good to hear from you again. I'm glad things are going better. Looking forward to this AAR. It looks like you've kept your main carriers afloat. What of the smaller ones?

BB Ise

Post by 1275psi »

LT Tokiwana settles into is hard metal seat, deep inside B turret, battleship Ise
With the experience of years of practice he settles his face into the periscope housing , its rubber seal settling comfortably about his forehead and chin.
The optics are already well focused, and today the visibility is superb.
Its moments like this that he relishes. Local control drills today. A day for him.
About him, the turret hums, smooth hydraulics, and just as smooth movements from the men about him.
Today drill number infinity, they have done this so many times before, so many, many times.
But all know the absolute importance of this, that when it is for real, everything depends on the drill.
4 times this war Ise has belched death from these guns, and all expect to do it again.

Tokiiwana , gun captain, calls his orders
""new target!, bearing 120 , range 15000!'
The great turret turns, the barrells rise and fall, the dummy charges rise, slide into place , the rythmic chanting of the gun layers sing sweetly, hoarsly as the drill commences
he brings "the target" into focus.
BB Yamato, and behind her,her great sister, the entire battle line.

First fleet, minus the damaged nagato, Hyuga, sails north to the rendevou.
All the ships drill today, drill as they do every day, awaiting with utter confidence "the decisive battle"

2nd LT Asada swings his zero around for yet another lap, eyes scanning the sky about him. he needs to, it is thick with fighters, 60 plus, stacked at multiple levels, combat air patrol above their sheep

Asada sits easily in his seat, hands relaxed, the beat of the engine sweet and sure to his ears. It will be a long day, this day of CAP, and not an un dangerous one.
Not from the enemy of course, it has been over a month since there was a prospect of that, and precious few times before that.
2 and a half years, and just 3 engagements. (not that the blow against darwin could be called an engagement),
The yanks just refused to fight, the Ambon relief op had seemingly promised something.....
2 and a half years of CAP

And now, it seeemed, even more CAP
Kido Baru 3, Hiyo, Junyo, 5 CVL, 3 CVE, agano, 8 DD lead the main fleet north. Most of her strike aircraft ashore, replaced with whatever fighters could be scraped together, what ever fighters, and apparently pilots as well.

Thus today, thus yesterday, and probably thus tomorrow. CAP patrols, training in CAP patrols.
Asada knows what the mission is, all know what the mission is.
Escort the giants to the decisive battle
Whatever the cost

WO Goto sleeps

he rests his back comfortably against the side of his little type 97 tankette, oblivious to the rumble of the guns 5 Miles north of him at Moulmien
The daily bombardment there wasnt against 18th division today
The daily wellington raids wasnt against 18th Division today
Nor the spitfires, the hurricanes, the endless supply of allied planes .
Not today

he sleeps for the bombradment means little.
25th, 15th, army, entrenched like ticks into elephant hide, were not going anywhere.

Soon 18th div would rotate to the North, but until then.....

Po Kanda delicately guides his NK1 down onto the strip at Puerto Princesa, stiffening as the wheels bounce on the dirt. One enver knew if the undercart of this beast was going to collapse with any landing, any takeoff.
You just hoped, at times, that it wouldn't be your turn today.

The engine splutters to silence, and for a moment he contemplates what has been a very busy day

The sweep over (what did they call it? taluaed island?-whatever, yet another island speck south of davao) has been the usual mix of terror and exhaultation. Kill number 6, a Mustang this time.
But they were so good, those Mustangs, those corsairs. Almost as good as the T bolts.
204 KUS-1 has taken 9 down today.....and lost, how many?
Too many

3 days ago, 72 veterans strong
Now, it seems, just 48
Some stragglers to be expected, but by Gods, how to stop them?

Wearily he climbs from the cockpit, looks around.
Another bleak airfield in this mad war, another nameless point on a map

he walks towards what is clealy the ready tent
Another point on the map, but its not hard to notice, a little closer to japan than the last one.

18th July
Smn Ashishi gets little time to view manilla bay
Combined fleet, 12 carriers, 4 battleships strong refuels overnight, not from the AO's, but from a motely collection of tankers, AKs and support vessels and promptly departs again.
Ashishi , like most of the crew, has little idea of the next destination, he does know they are headed North again, he can read the compass as well as the next man, but the officers give little away

His lookout watch does not pass quietly, no less than 5 times he is reminded to "keep a lookout!, there are SS about!", but the fleet , it appears to him, remains undetected.

As usual, Smn Ashishi is left ignorant of the world about him, his job is simple- scan the horizon, report anything, any bloody thing suspicious.
But one thing he is not ignorant of, and it sends a slight shiver down his spine.
Surely it cannot be true?
But the grimness gripping the Bridge command seems to confirm the rumour

Siapan fallen?
Guam, Tinianm palua gone?
No, that cant be true, can it?

tankettes

Post by 1275psi »

"Come on then, back to work"
WO Goto gently kicks his driver ordinary soldier Watambe awake
Watambe shrugs, stretches, and slowly climbs to his feet
"You've found us some breakfast?'
This, of course is a joke. Nobody in 18th division is eating breakfast these days, they will eat at midday, barely. But at least they will. Word is some units to the North are barely at all.
Goto smiles- "we might get lucky, come on, the General is waiting"

The Type 97 tankette is a little beast, a small rear engined (diesel powered) vehcile, with ridicoulously narrow tracks, a tiny one man turret. Once manned Gotos left foot usually rested on Watambe's right shoulder, and he could direct him by simply speaking.
Not that he needed to often. Together they had driven this little tin can from Singapore to the northern reaches of Burma, and halfway back again.
Watambe instinctively knew now what Goto wanted, knew when to turn, when to halt to allow Goto to load and fire, and most importantly, knew when to retire into cover.

Between them, not a single part of this little vehcile had not passed through their hands, been repaired, cursed at, hammered, or replaced.
Both men , despite its failings, loved "Our tin can"

2 and a half years, and they had fired their gun twice- 2 rounds into a stubborn Burmese machine gun during the encirclement of Rangoon, so long ago it was hard to remember. They had done a lot of hard driving chasing the retreating British, that they remembered well, that and the equally fast retreat to Moulmien 6 months ago
6 months, was it six months since then?
yes, it was, the british took 2 more before crossing the river, and were stopped cold.

The type 97 is useless in combat, everyone knew that, but as an all terrain vehcile it was ideal. especially for generals keen to inspect the front.
Being the Generals ride has its advantages.
Maybe today Goto might really find out what is going on, and as a bonus, maybe even get a breakfast of sorts at the generals expense?

reinforcements

Post by 1275psi »

Puerto Princesa has a wide and long airfield, carefully developed nearly a year ago
And yet, thinks PO kanda, 10 years would not have been enough to make it a good one, let alone a year
There are no buildings to speak off, just tents, old, stained tents. No walkways- obvious that when it rains one will wallow in mud.
AA guns- few, far too few
And as for the dispersals....

But on the positive, anchored just off shore, 6 fat transports slowly disgorging supplies via a shutlle of barges and small boats.
Here at least supplies would not be an immediate issue.
204th is stood down for today, but its still going to be a busy day. Nearly a dozen replacement fighters are being prepared, and if rumour has it, a good 2 dozen veteran pilots.
Kanda visits the HQ, the maintenance area, the vehcile pool.
Its actually encouraging, someone somewhere is making this place a piority, multiple fighter groups, and peggy bombers too.
Satisfied enough, he will take this given day of rest.
Tomorrow, lets see what 204th really is at. Does it has teeth, or not?

dinner

Post by 1275psi »

Wardroom, DD Akizuki.

LTCMDR Kizuka pokes at his dinner, not really interested in its contents. If he could have he'd have been below, the Charge apparently "had a little problem to discuss".
But the XO insists, all will attend the evening meal, no excuses.
Akizuki rides the swells easily, the ever constant beat of the forced draught blowers just below them reassuringly constant.
The Charge, he is sure, has it all in hand.

Conversation again, turns to the war.
What next?
Ambon, it seems, is the most popular choice.
Ahh Ambon, now that had been a mission, the entire navy it seemed escorting and then delivering 10000 men to the disputed outpost, the Army swearing to destroy the 2 Aussie divisions there.
They hadn't.
So many here , the younger ones especially, think, and argue, that surely they would return there and reinforce, or if not, evacuate. They had just missed the Americans then, wouldnt it give them another opportunity?

kanda offers his opinion (not that the warfare types would listen to him, just an Engineer)
"The days gentlemen, of the great counter attack, like in the Flores islands, or Saumlaki, or even Sorong, are done.
Siapan is gone, the yanks are sweeping Davao and even further North. No gentlemen, we are concentrating for one reason only, defend the Phillipines, that or Iwo Jima. One or the other"
"You really think that Engines?" the Xo asks
"Yes"
"We have lost 1cvl, a few cruisers this war, we are stronger than ever, just look out the port hole, count the carriers. We will be back, I guarrantee it"
Kizuka declines to answer
Yes, so few ships apparently lost.
But how many allied ones sunk?
Buggar all, thats how many, Buggar all
