Copy+Paste units in ScenMaker?

Post by Muletears »

Just wondering if there is any way of copying and pasting units from one scenario to another in ScenMaker rather than picking everything individually from the Estabs?

Sorry, not to move units from one scenario to another. The closest you could get would be to recreate the same structure of units, including selecting their estabs, then export/import just the designations and stats. You have to make sure everything is listed in the same order in the Force List though otherwise you'll get mislabelled units.

That might be a bit confusing now I re-read it.

The best option for creating new scenarios is to use the TEMPLAT4.AAS scenario file - this contains all the forces used in the HTTR scenarios. Save that file under a new name, then change the map and use the existing forces to create your scenario.

If you are creating brand-new forces (for instance British 6th Airborne Division), and you want to use those in more than one scenario, I recommend doing all the construction work in a template scenario - you could even use the HTTR template file mentioned above, add your new forces, and save it under a different name.

If you want to use forces you've created in one scenario in a different existing scenario, without starting from scratch, it gets a bit more complex. Within each scenario the units are identified with a unique ObjectID number. When you Export Force Data, and paste it into an Excel file, the left-hand column contains these ObjectID numbers. When you Import Force Data, the ScenMaker will take the information next to each ObjectID and will paste it into the unit with that ObjectID in the scenario. If there is no unit with the same ObjectID, the import will fail. Note that the only information that gets exported are the Unit Name, Unit Designation (the letters/numbers on the counter), and the various unit and commander numeric stats like deployment, strength, cohesion, leadership etc. The estab for that unit does not get exported; the only way to apply an estab to a unit is to drag it off the estab list onto the Unit Info window.

When the ScenMaker exports the force data, it does so in the same order that the units are listed in the Force List. So what you could do, to short-cut the process a bit, is to create the same group of units, in the same order, in the ScenMaker, and attach the correct estabs to each one. Then Export from the completed scenario. Paste it into Excel and call this worksheet "Source". Then Export - to a new worksheet - from the new scenario. Call this worksheet "Target". Find the units that you want to copy on the Source worksheet, and copy to the clipboard all their information except the ObjectID. Find the group of blank units on the Target worksheet, and paste in the data next to the ObjectID column, being careful not to overwrite it. Then select all the data in the Target worksheet, copy it to clipboard, and Import it into the new scenario. If you have done everything right, the units will now have all the same attributes, except for Commander Name and Commander Rank which you will have to set manually.

As I say, I strongly recommand finishing development of new force groups in a template scenario and using that to generate anything further.

I also have an Excel add-in which provides you with tools for quickly working with unit values - basically to perform similar functions to the menu items in the ScenMaker. I am still polishing that up for public use but I will put it out when I get done with it.
