Life D-Day Commemorative Issue

Post by tmac »

When I came home today my wife had bought me a little present at the store....the above mentioned Life magazine D-Day 60th Anniversary Commemorative Issue. To all WWII buffs, do yourself a favor and check this gem out. It has great illustrations (drawn and painted), good text, and many many great photos, both famous ones and others not so often seen. All this is in the old large format Life style. I am well read in matters WWII, and some of these photos I have never seen published before. There is one panorama view photo taken from an artillery observation plane (Ammo SGT take note, seems to back up your claims on these issues) that is supporting an attack throught the bocage country toward St Lo. There is both a white phosphorous barrage impacting in front of the assault and a high explosive barrage hitting an enemy assembly area off a little way. It is incredible! There's more shots of both the assault over the beaches and the fight to consolidate. If there is a shortcoming it is the US forces focus, seems short on the contributions of our gallant British and Canadian brothers. It does cover the captured Germans and liberated French civilians, again with many candid photos. Another plus for me (being a great admirer of him) it has a wonderful candid shot of General George C. Marshall visiting the front. He is bent over splashing water on his face, and he shows he has a .45 Colt at the small of his back. Can't be too careful, even if you are the COS.
Go get a copy, it's only $5.
