Although efforts at realism are appreciated, I think most playing the Germans will want streamlined production.
The Loss of experience that comes each time a unit is upgraded won't be appreciated by the German player where the experience of replacements is lower causing a continous further loss of experience.
Somebody already has done this for the Sov's by not allowing the building of the t-34/42 which was a major variant. THe Stug-IIIf, 2 versions of the Pz-IIIj would also be wastes of experience.
I never change production from the Pz-IVh to the J. The loss in experience and a week's production is hardly worth it. If one wanted to go to the far edge of the spectrum, one could build the Pz-Va&g variants, or the TigerII(P)&(H). Tiny changes, that affected performance and survivability, but in a game like this just too much errata.
I wouldn't build the Ju-188 either. The Ju-88 was never truly replaced by the Ju-188. The S version of the Ju-88 was created in 44'.
Give me the Ju-290 and a city on the map called "Urals" and I could be coaxed into interest.

I really wish the code contemplated variants of the same hardware, as in it being easier to switch production from Bf-109E to Bf-109G than to Fw-190A. This would also go for the experience hit from refitting units. I bet Luftwaffe pilots found it easier to switch to Bf-109Ks after flying the Gustav than switching over to the Me-262.

I can see how it would look like I complicated production, but as a matter of fact for the most part I have actually maintained or simplified production from 3.3. the new german production schedual is actually unchanged from what (I assume) you would do for a normal german game. The only diff now is the Pz IIIh and the Pz IVe are done their production run so they are up at the front line in full numbers and so germany starts with the Pz IIIj/42 and the Pz IVf already in production. Of coarse most people I’m sure change all their factories to the Pz III immediately at the start of the game. After that you’d upgrade to the Pz IIj/60, and then in spring ’42 you’d go right to the Pz IVg like usual. Yes, there’s the Pz IIIl and IIIm after the IIIj/60 which complicates that production, but who makes Pz III’s after the Pz IVg comes into production? When I researched I checked EVERY MODEL of all tanks, and only included the ones which had higher stats from it’s prdedicessor - for example the new Pz IV production tree no longer includes the Pv IVj after the Pz IVh because the IVj is identical to the IVh except for production simplifications; so even though there are the same number of Pz IV models, game production-wise it has been simplified! The same could be said of the KV-1: I ended up simplifying that to a general model just to give the soviets the benefit of having the best version’s (KV-1E) armour. 3.3 has the KV-1 order backwards by the way – it’s supposed to be the KV-1E M1940, then the KV-1 M1941 after, not the opposite! About the Pz III I would finally like to add that in January 1943 all the older models turn to the Pz IIIm so at least they eventually simplify themselves.

I think also the slightly cheaper units will make it a little easier to keep Bn #’s up later allowing you to not have to upgrade as often and keep experience up. As far as I can tell letting the confuser ai upgrade your units gives you no loss in experience, while manually upgrading you lose the unit’s experience divided by 10 – I would say not catastrophic, especially since usually you are usually upgrading up a from a much inferior tank! (it takes a long time to finally get rid of all those Pz II’s from the front!).

I would like to note I scrapped the Moscow/berlin map mod and I increased the price of all soviet tanks/TD’s by one to make it only slightly cheaper from their 3.3 prices. The sovs have lots of factories anyways! I also raised early german tank prices up slightly to be more in line with their current 3.3 prices. Germany takes very few tank casualties in ’41 compared to their actual historical losses anyways, and the prices go down in ’42 when they need more replacements.

As far as the ju-188 goes I could have sworn it was included in 3.2, but it wasn’t so I’m not touching the aircraft at all until later, except for the Do-217 not upgrading thing.

Hey, if I could make a city called urals and make that worth 1 victory point instead of leningrad I defiantly would!

Anybody know if the soviets had to import any essential resources to keep the war effort going? i assume not…

The Soviets tended to play down the help that the allies sent, which is correct in the case of tanks. The allied models were nowhere as good as Soviet and German vehicles. They made good use of Hurricane and P39 aircraft, but had plenty of their own good designs. Probably the most valuable item the allies provided where 500,000 trucks and jeeps (mostly US). These were far superior to any vehicles produced by any other nation and made it possible to effectively motorise the Red Army. It is probable that the advances of late 1943 and 1944 could not have been made without them and the war might have taken much longer[:)].
