Sound Card Incompatability?

Post by GeneSteeler »

Hello!

First off, I'd like to apologise if this is the wrong place to post this message. I wasn't sure if I should post this to the "other" board, or here. I thought that if anyone else encountered this hiccup they could benefit if I posted here.

I love TOSWS, and have been playing it up to a week ago without the slightest hiccup. Last week I installed a new soundcard (previously I was just using the onboard sound of my Motherboard). My new soundcard is a SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 with the latest drivers from Oct2003. I haven't had problems with any other piece of software I've tried to date and my DXDiag successfully performs all tests.

The problem: Trying to start Factory, HQ, or Battle results in my computer rebooting. (I can enter the options screen without difficulty though. Hitting "exit" also causes a crash. (NB: I've tried reinstalling TOSWS, but it reboots, regardless of which version number I play)

Now, If I turn off "Sound-at-all" in the config file, I can play without sound - not an acceptable option. But the work-around that I came to was to enter my Control Panel and turn-off Hardware Acceleration. This way I can play TOSWS with glorious sound back on and it's rocking soundtrack! The only issue, is that sometimes I forget to adjust my hardware acceleration before loading TOSWS and I still reboot my system.

Is this a known problem or is a "fix", please let me know. Thanks.

I had no problems with Live! and the 2002 driver package. Did not try the new ones as I switched to use the Audigy.

Just tested Live! 5.1 with the latest drivers at my friends computer and its working fine. Sorry, no idea to help you.
