Sites for alternative SPWaW sounds

Post by KG Erwin »

Gentlemen, if you have site listings for alternative sounds that can be used in SPWaW, please post them here. I found this one, http://www.earthstation1.com/WWII_Sound_Effects.html , which has some 8-bit mono wavs of various weapons, fly-overs, etc. Two of the best ones to be found here are a bombardment from an Iowa-class BB, and a BAR.

I'm still trying to find an alternative sound for the Thompson SMG, but have been unsuccessful so far. This is not to say that the SPWaW sounds are unsuitable, but since some weapons have three sound files associated with them, I've found that occasionally inserting an alternative within the set offers a bit more variety.

If I get enough responses, I'll make this one a sticky.

If you replace your old sound files, be sure to save them as a backup in case the new sound file causes problems. I replaced a sound file once and it caused me to crash regularly for about 6 mos. until gmenfan mentioned that there was a bad sound file going around that did that.

I'm all for new sounds though. I hope there are lots submitted. Good string suggestion KG.

Yes, asolutely. ALWAYS backup old files before replacing them.

Here's another site that was posted on another thread by Sergio Castaldi: http://www.geocities.com/colonel_von_bl ... /sound.htm

Here's one that Jamminji found: http://www.wargamer.com/gamesdepot/search_game.asp

The sounds created by "Scout" have grunts & screams & things like "got 'im!" added to the standard weapons tracks. These give SPWaW a "Close Combat"-type flavor.

Another thing to remember with sound files...the game uses them in groups of three for movement sounds, particularly foot units. I installed some of those "new" sounds for infantry and listened to my Brits yell out in French every now and then.

Each sound file should be duplicated twice (giving you three identical files) and then loaded into the SND folder.

Also, it means modifying each nations OOB to give all the foot troops a specific sound to use, instead of the default "marching feet" one. When you do this, only use the lowest file number of each "set" you created (see above) in the unit's sound slot.

EXAMPLE:
Copy sound file 840 twice more and rename 841 and 842
Open UK OOB, choose foot unit, and set sound to 840
Now, game will use 840, 841, and 842 sounds when this unit moves

Be wary of changing things in the oob editor, if you play pbem, you will get the dreaded "oobs dont match" message.
Even if you change the sound a unit is assigned.
