Repairing Mounts on damaged ships

Post by Oznoyng »

I have seen several references to damaged mounts on ships not being upgraded if they are sent back to PH. I haven't noticed a way to direct what repairs will be done on a ship. So far, it looks like fires are put out, floatation damage is repaired, and system damage gets repaired.

How exactly do you repair a specific system?

Find a port 6 or bigger and let the ship sit there (disbanded) for awhile. It sometimes takes a LONG while. I have seen it take 2 days to replace 8 inch guns on a cruiser and a month to replace 40mm AA guns. Seems very random.

You can not direct repairs, it is out of your hands completely.

There is a bug for the US the sytems needs to be repaired ON THE MAP before the ship is returned to PH. If the ship is sent back tp PH with mount damage it is cast in stone NEVER to be repaired. You need the shp to stay in port of size 5 or larger until the mount/system gets fixed.

Doesn't that kinda eliminate the benefits of sending the ship to Pearl? Other than getting AA upgrades, between the 38 days transit too and from PH and the risk of permanently losing a mount, it seems like it might be alot better to just fix stuff in theatre if you have a mount out.

yes and no for ships with mild damage and mount damage probably better to keep them in theater. Remeber you only have to keep the ship in theater until the mount is repaired then it can go back to PH. but anything with heavy damage will repair so much faster that it is well worth the 38 day transit time to send it on back. Also the AA upgrades are tremendous! they can mean the differcne between get 4 ships damaged and 5 ships sunk!

Yup. I sent my carriers to PH on 5/2/42 along with many of their escorts. A couple of them came back with *nice* AA upgrades. In particular, the Porter class DD seemed to get a huge upgrade. I haven't had a chance to look again to be sure, but I *thought* I saw it go from 220 to 500... I had two at scenario start and sent one back to see what would happen. If that is what really happened, both will go to PH next time. :)

It was weird though. I read here that there is only one AA upgrade, but Yorktown came back with less AA than Enterprise and Hornet. I forget the details, but I think Yorky went to PH with something like 1100 to start and came back with 1400ish, but Enterprise and Hornet (Yorktown class I thought) came in with even more (1600?).

I believe part of it may have to do with history, Yorktown may have been sunk before recieveing the second AA upgrade so its not inculded in the game? Not sure why but your right Yorkie has a lower AA rating then her sisters

Does it make any difference as to the number of ships that are in the port, as to how long it takes to repair fire, floatation, and system damage?

Lets say 30 ships compared to 80 ships. Or is the repair equal on all ships?

I usually send my heavier damaged ships to PH after any mount damage is repaired. I made the mistake one sending one back with mount damage, and sure enough it came back still damaged. Hopefully this is fixed in WiP.

Usually anything 20 and under says in Theatre.

I believe number of ships makes no difference to speed of repair in UV, but I understand it will (as it should) in WitP.

I think the number of ships in port with flotation damage will make a difference
in the time it takes to stop the flooding, if there are too many ships in port it
takes a long time to stop the flooding as the repairs alternate back and forth
to the most heavely flooded ships, But the size of the port and number of
engineers makes a big difference also.
Personally in my size 4 ports I try to only keep 2 ships with flotation damage
in there and cycle them out if I have more coming in with heavier damage
then pass them back to the bigger bases.
Capital ships repair very slowly so once they get up to 25 - 30 sys damage I
send them to Pearl.
and definately rotate them back for AA upgrades as it makes a big difference
defending against air strikes.

On the ship information screen? [;)]

Upper right side. I think it was added in one of the patchs since it does not show up in the version 2.0 manual.

It's all very confusing, but I think that US CVs have two AA upgrades (this may also be true of other classes of ships, but I'm not sure). Radar is upgraded at least once, as well, and this does apply to major surface combatants (BBs and cruisers).

The Porters do, indeed, become 500 AA ships when upgraded.

If you want a good checklist of all the upgrades all these ships had, including the Japanese, check the Data Annex of the Command at Sea wargame rules from Clash of Arms. Much cheaper than buying all those copies of Jane's!

Does anyone have any info as to whether this bug will be fixed in UV and whether it has already been resolved in WitP?

Thanks, Pascal, but I was talking about in UV. I am pretty sure that US CVs get two AA upgrades. I'm not so sure about BBs, CAs, and CLs. DDs, I think, only get one.

It may be that the cruisers in the game at the start get two, but the later-arriving ones come with the first upgrade already incorporated, so that they are only eligible for one more. That's probably true of the BBs, as well, considering that they come in at a later stage (and mayber, now that I think about it, this is true of the later arriving CVs, too).

It sure would be nice if Matrix/2by3 would generate a couple of laminated sheets of player aids containing this kind of information in tabular form for these games ...

Here's a new one for me. I had a CL with two damaged 20mm mounts as well as about 20 sys damage. Knowing I couldn't send it back to Pearl until the mounts were repaired, I left in in Noumea. It has now repaird to 0 sys damage, but has not repaired either of the 20mm mounts. Anyone know whether it will continue to have a chance to fix these mounts even though it no longer has any sys damage?

It should. Whatever you do, don't send it back to Pearl.

My understanding is that if the ship does not repair itself in a certain amount of time-then it will never. Might as well send it back to Pearl. You will get AA upgrades anyways. It is a bug-so there is a variance of opinion as to how it works.
