Is it possible to play in window mode rather than full screen?

If so, how?

No it isn't. And don't switch out in the front screen, the game will abandon you.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, you didn't plan your mission properly.

You can Alt-Tab out of the game, just understand that it isn't a guaranteed thing to do. I only do it when I'm testing and wouldn't mind a crash.

Yes, you can Alt-Tab out of the game. You can't do it out of the opening screen. Everything is fine after your first choice.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, you didn't plan your mission properly.
