CVL airgroup question

Post by Pascal_slith »

Hello,

this may have been asked before but here goes.

I put a 36 plane fighter squadron on the CVL Independence. No other squadrons are on board as I wanted to have a 'fighter' only carrier. However, when I moved the CVL out in a TF (with Essex), the 'Ready' aircraft number went down to 9 and 24 were put into reserve (3 were left on the dock). The a/c capacity of the CVL is 30, so why was the only squadron on board reduced to 9 'ready' a/c instead of 30?

I think its somethng to do with the slots on the CVL. If you transfer the planes back onto shore they should retain there 36 aircraft. I also think it has something to do with the CV capacity ie 36 planes wont operate from a 30 plane CV, so it reduces the size. If you had of transfered a 24 plane group or even the 30 planes from Wasp I dont think you have this issue.

A carrier will not perform any ops if it has more than 110% of it's rated capacity on board.

As far as the ready aircraft number, the only problem I have had is: a squadron leaving pilots behind for some reason.

When you change fighters units in CV, all planes may no toperate everytime. It depends of the units chosen and the CV. It is usual for the second fighter unit sent abaove the bigger CV to operate only 24 of the 30 or 36 planes it had, or for a fighetr squadron of 27, 30 or 36 to operate only 18 or 24 planes aboard CVL and CVE.

If you search a reason, it may simulate the fact that those ships are not bale to handle such a big number of fighters....

That is for both sides. Also don't forget the fact that you must not exceed the 110% capacity or no plane will fight.

Well, my CVL is only operating 9 of the 36, and the a/c capacity is 30.... Is this a bug in UV?

It is not a bug. It is because of the unseen logic hard-coded into the game.

Each CV has a certain % of spcae for fighters, dive bombers, and torpedo bombers.
For example, Japanese CVs start with 1/3, 1/3, and 1/3 of each type. Later in the war (Maybe August 42?) they switch to 2/5, 2/5 and 1/5. I don't know the allied percents because I only play Japanese.

Once I edited a scenario and added some A6M5s in (fighter-bombers). Wow, did that mes things up. Apparently the ratio for figher-bombers is really low because my numbers became 1/6, 3/6, and 2/6. I liked having all of the attack planes by 1/6 fighters is pretty much unplayable.

OK. But unfortunately that means that you can't experiment with a/c mixes. I would rather this were NOT so and the next patch for UV accept any carrier-trained a/c mix on a carrier for operational purposes (i.e. carrier not used simply as an a/c transport).

I'd at least like to know what the percents are and which months they change. What I've learned so far has been from experimentation.

I put a squadron of 24 planes on one of my CVE's with a capaicity of 31 and havent had any problems. Im fairly sure your problem kicks on when you try to put more planes than the 110%

10% of 30 is 3, so 110% of 30 is 33; 36 is 120% of 30. This may be part of your problem.
