Executive officer in charge of carrier has control of *everything*?

Post by Deathifier »

Hi,
After my escapade against Fort Talas I got the points needed for promotion to commodore :)

The first thing I did was take the carrier off to Meridian to help the now 97% damaged Radix and a 95% damaged frigate (how it went from 20-95 when all it was shooting were unarmed transports whilst I was away I do not know) in Meridian.

Problem is my joystick is old and has issues sitting comfortably in the center (a deadzone would help). As anyone could guess launching and recovering fighters whilst your carrier is trying to do loops does not work and in order to manage your fighter groups you can't be maintaining stability all the time...

So I thought, "What if I gave control to the exec. officer, told them to keep the ship still and then I could move it around easier and control fighters".

I turned over control. The carrier immediately proceeded to head south at thrust alternating between max and min and, worst of all, started spitting out fighters in a continual stream!

Some of these were patrol, some were intertercept enemy startships (which my manually launched scout was still looking for) and one flight was even told to intercept DD Radix!? (They never fired thankfully, but still!).

I could not figure out how to get the ship to halt, it's command menu either wasn't coming up or had nothing in it aside from the usual 4 options. I attemped to set a waypoint but it didn't seem to do anything (probably because at that point I accidently hit auto-nav and quantum jumped out of system to the first nav-point the game had set)...

What I really want to do is turn over just control of the physical ship and its movement to the exec. and NOT the entire fighter compliment. This would allow a better C&C role and let the exec. shoot at anything that comes into range on their own whilst I swat ships with fighters from afar :)

Is this going to be changed, or am I going to have to switch to keyboard control to keep my carrier still?

Run Notepad and open file key.cfg. Find line
KEY_JOY_DEAD_ZONE and change number after it.
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

Sometimes the AI goes psycho and starts attacking friendly targets. Unsure why. It's rare.

Doubling it worked perfectly, thanks!

In a scripted mission you can make this decision for yourself. The mission element "command ai" flag indicates whether the ship should use a carrier ai object to manage the fighter cover. It is an easy fix for me to disable the command ai for the player's ship in the campaign. Thanks for the bug report - you got it in just under the wire.

As it's possible to give control of your ship to your XO via the right-click menu, it'd be nice to get it back via the menu as well (AFAIK, currently it's possible only with shift+M).
