Two New Scenarios by Greg McCarty at The ARMOR Site!

Post by Fabio Prado »

Hi!

I have just posted two exceptional scenarios by Greg McCarty - "Into the Breach", which deals with the obscure battle for Caumont, Normandy, June 12, 1944; and "In the Eye of the Storm", which depicts the German defense of the East of the Toropets by Kompanie G against the Russian hordes, January 16, 1942.
Greg's scenarios are the result of extremely serious research, being as historically accurate as humanly possible. You will also enjoy the detailed history background he provides with his scenarios!
To get them, go to The ARMOR Site's Special Scenarios Page!

But Greg doesn't stops here. He also provides us with new MG 34 and 42 sounds, that you'll like to hear as you go through his scenarios. To get the new sounds, go to The ARMOR Site's SPWAW DOWNLOADS Page!

That's all for now...I hope you all will enjoy Greg's work as much as I did!

I managed to download "Into The Breach" but I can't seem to find the link to download "In the Eye of the Storm".

Both of these scenarios are so much fun! I think there's a certain cinematic quality to them. Lots of little dramatic things can occur. In "Eye of the Storm" I had Opel trucks returning to the front after safely dropping off the bulk of the retreating force in the forest exit hexes. These guys went head on through sheets of Russian fire to pick up the remaining units! As a point of honor, the last unit to mount a vehicle was my HQ unit and they managed stop long enough on the way out to pick up crewmen from the trucks that didn't make it!
I got a Moderate Victory with a total of about 2 squads of infantry destroyed along with the Bravest of the Brave: 1 MG34 crew, both 50mm mortar crews and the "zero unit" 81mm crew. Like I said, not all of those trucks made it...
BTW, that

"zero unit" 81mm has A LOT of smoke ammo. You will need it all!

Greg...what OOB did you use for the "Into the breech" scenario? I have some odd weapon configurations with the german APC´s.

BTW: interesting scenarios with interesting unit mixes. The US night attack feels a little bit "un-american" though. (no Arty, and AI US units rushing to the VHs like japs on night banzai charge)

I see what you mean... An extra MG with no ammo.
Wonder how I missed that? The final developement
was with 6.1, however, Massimo Rocca had caught some peculiar ammo loadouts at one point too. I
attribute this to an editor hiccough of some kind. I Imagine I'll re-edit those units and upload an update to Fabio. Spot any other
oddities?

As for the night attack, well, its pretty much as described in Max Hastings book. It started with probing attacks in the afternoon, but eventually escalated into an all night brawl. Admittedly, night attacks were probably not something the U.S. Army planned by choice as a rule, but this one was forcefully pursued for some reason. Neither Hastings, nor the U.S. Army description
elaborate on why. The only artillery involved was
what was intrinsic to the Inf Battalion and the
AufsKlarungs Battalion by any account. Simply light and medium morters. And I suspect those were used rather carefully by both sides because of the close proximity of friendly and enemy forces by evening.

Thanks for your input, I'll see that this gets corrected.

Well, there were actually a couple of problems;
nothing that would fracture the scenario fortunately, but they were there. They have been
corrected, and a new update is already available
at Fabio's Armour site. Its good that you noted it, because, although they behaved satisfactorily,
many of the ACs were not correct. Not only was
the phantom 3rd weapon out of place, but the MG42
on some units was out of place. It appears that the origin of the problem had to do with two things: Some anomalies that can result from changing unit TYPES, and some questionable secondary weapon types on 2 or 3 of the GE
AC species. My guess would be that unless some
real radical unit changes were made in 7.0, the units involved in "Breach" are generic enough to work well there also. Well see.
Greg.

I have posted an update by Greg which fixes the MG problems:

http://www.fprado.com/armorsite/Scenarios_SPWAW/SPWAW-200-TheBreach.zip

All you have to do is do download the scenario again and unzip it over the old one...
