Map Editor queries

Post by Peter Why »

1 Is it possible to put lava at heights above ground level? I want a minor volcano.
2 Is there an accessible Random function? .. so a lava flow can run along different paths when a scenario is run a second time
3 With a lava flow through woods, is the chance that the woods burn automatic or does it have to be set up by the map-maker?

1) No [:(]

2) No... but I like the suggestion.

3) Hmmm... just tested it and No, they sit there after a terrian change... this should be looked into, fire-proof trees are a no-no. Don't think anyone has thought about what happens to trees, buildings, stuff in general if a terrian change introduces lava or acid... Larkin hint. hint. [;)]

Maybe it has something to do with there being no trees in Core and BioChem?

As for creating a volcano, try using plains for the volcano surface, and depressions as the surrounding terrain. Use terrain height modifiers for giving the impression of slopes. You can use Savannah's wadi and BioChem's pit for intermediate heights if you need to. It might not look too good though.

Thanks for answers. I'll post an outline of the story later. A shame about the volcano .. lava pouring down a hill could add a lot of interest.

You can play around with 'liquids' and the different elevations and sometimes find a way to reach a comprimised effect. I ran into a situation where I wanted a lake behind a dam and a river in front of the dam, obviously all the water ended up at the same elevation, but the surrounding terrian kinda gives the impression the lake is at a higher elevation. Personally, I'd love to see the liquids be added as a type of ground cover so they could be added over the elevation so you could have good lava flows, waterfalls, etc, but that would probably take some pretty major codework.

btw. Lava and trees, like I mentioned before lava don't automatically trigger trees to burst into flame, but if the lava is based on an event that happens at a set time or you use some 'trickery' in the case of lava events triggered by the player/AI then you can add events that will ignite the trees in the same second the lava engulfs them.

I have one such map on hold for a long time... there's just no time.
