Multiple Mods Enabled?

Post by Dekzar »

Heya,

I was just curious if anyone knows, will it be possible to enable more than one mod at a time in the retail version? Like, say I have a B5 mod and a Star Wars mod, and I want to see whether the EA or the Empire would win. Could I enable both mods, and then make my own mission pitting the two against eachother?

Or, a more practical use, if there was a really huge mod .DAT file, what if I split it into three .dat files. You know, one race in moda.dat the second race in modb.dat and the third race in modc.dat? And then enable all three in StarShatter and have all the missions in a fourth .dat drawing ships from each of the three race .dat files?

Possible? Useful?

Yes, possible and useful. The mod configuration screen allows you to select several mods and deploy them at the same time. You can also choose the order in which they get deployed. When the game needs a resource, it searches the mods in order from top to bottom. This allows a weapon-tweak mod to supersede the damage parameters or sound effects in another mod archive without needing to redesign the entire package.

The idea has always been to allow people to further customize each other's mods, and to combine different mods in fun ways (e.g. to finally settle that Wars vs. Trek argument).

milo, you missed part about spliting .DAT files. When it was last discussed, it was said it won't be possible to open packed .DAT file. Of course some hacker may find way around this and spread tools all over Internet like was done with Total Annihilation HPI file system.

All right! If Trekkie wins with his/her mod, then Wars modder put few more extra zeros to hull integrity and weapon damage parameters, then Trek modder counter with same thing and you can guess the rest
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

It still isn't possible. The original mod author can choose to publish a mod in as many or as few pieces as he wants. With a really large mod such as Hold The Line, it would make perfect sense for the team to release it with one archive containing each race's ships, one archive for the B5 galaxy, and one additional archive containing all the missions. However, that is up to them, not you or me.
