The Movie Troy

Post by Von Rom »

I just saw the movie "Troy".

I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. At almost three hours I wasn't bored.

Initially, I was expecting a pretty-boy romp through Troy-lite. . .

However, I am impressed with Brad Pitt's peformance; he does the "brooding, troubled, Achilles" quite well. He is also very believable as that great ancient warrior.

Sean Bean is also in the movie, and after his performance in the Lord of the Rings, I have become a fan of this actor. He doesn't disappoint here as well.

As to costumes, sets, and overall look of the film, it gets a very high rating. It seems as though even the smallest detail has not been over-looked.

The battle scenes and sword play are second to none, with suitably brooding music.

If you like ancient history, and enjoy watching ancient epic battles, then I think you will also like this film. It definitely is a movie that needs to be seen on the big screen.

It seems this year will see its fair share of historical films: "King Arthur", "Alexander the Great", etc

Hmmm now you have me wanting to see it.

Can you comment on a remark I saw saying the last 10 minutes wrecked the film?

You mean where they turn it into a chick-flick where Achilles realises that he loves the girl after all and then he dies while saving her?

Nah... I can't comment about that

don't forget the llamas, we all know the Trojans had llamas [8|]

it wasn't a bad movie if you don't know anything about llamas, Greek myth, or ancient history. As far as action flicks go it was pretty good. I wonder how Leonidas feels about this movie...

Well, I read some of the reviews about the film, and quite frankly, just ignore them, and enjoy the movie.

Because of those reviews I had low expectations about the film before I saw it. However, I was pleasantly surprised. It has great atmosphere. For a three hour movie we can't expect everything to be perfect, but considering that a movie about this time period has even been made, I think it is worth seeing on the big screen.

This is a guy's movie - lots of fighting. Men have all the lead roles. This could be the reason reviewers are dumping on the film; females take a back seat.

As to the last ten minutes: yes, as Pitt (Achilles) is dying he makes a last plea to the Princess, but it didn't bother me at all. It seemed to fit with his character: throughout his life Achilles has cared for no one and has killed many men; he is troubled and seeks death, but it eludes him. Only after he realizes he is dying, does Achilles finally come to the realization that the Princess was the only person who ever gave him any true moments of peace. It is this fact that wakes him up to the realization that he does care about someone else other than himself; but by then, it is too late. . .

Pitt gave a very good performance throughout the movie, and after all, this is Hollywood - it's entitled to some dramatics. I have gained a new-found respect for Pitt as a lead actor, especially, in the action sequences.

The movie has all the elements we might expect when we think about the Trojan War. Remember, the movie is called "Troy"; it's not called "The Illiad". It's based loosely on Homer's epic and contains many elements from the book.

Homer was blind and "wrote" "The Illiad" 500 years AFTER the Trojan War. His book is his interpretation of the Trojan War. Who is to say that he got all the facts correct? He even has the Gods getting involved in the war. . . There is even some doubt about whether he even wrote "The Illiad" and the "Odyssey".

Homer's "Illiad" is more fantasy and myth; whereas, Petersen (of Das Boot fame) has aimed for a more human, "realistic" story. . .

If we were to take a magnifying glass to every single thing we watch, then nothing would be viewable. So those Llamas were seen for a whole 5 seconds. Definitely, no one should see this movie because of this error. [8|]

Sometimes we just have to say the heck with it and just enjoy a movie for its own sake.

Frankly, I like movies set in ancient history, and, considering the garbage that is in the theatres, I am willing to overlook a few minor imperfections here and there, so that more movies of this type will be made. . .

BTW, there is some speculation that "The Odyssey" may be the next movie that will be made. . .

Cheers!

Those of us here in the Matrix forums can be real nit pickers about "historical accuracy" so it figures we're going to whine and gripe about little details that are wrong. But it is only a movie and as far as that goes, if you like a good action flick, then this won't disappoint.
By the way, it might be getting panned in reviews because of an "anti-war movie" movement in the media. After all, war is horrible and evil and repugnant and we should in no way portray it as something to revere. While war IS all of these things, wars have also been big turning points in human history and should be explored, even in theater.

I've been a Sean Bean fan since he made the Sharpe series set in the Napoleonic wars. If you haven't seen those then you need to see them. A great actor and a great series.

Also glad to hear a positive review on Troy. I was going to go see it just for the visual experience but good acting and story can only make for an even more enjoyable viewing.

Heheh. . .

True, true. . . [:D]

That is an interesting viewpoint about the USA being in Iraq and the theme of the movie. Too bad critics mince real-life with the cinema. . .

That is why I take most of the critics' comments with a grain of salt - they always seem to have some agenda or axe to grind. . .

However, in this modern age we seem to delight in panning heroes or the accomplishments of men in battle. "Troy" tackles these issues with gusto. . .

Thanks for the tip about Sean Bean's series.

In the LoTR, many other actors are singled out. However, Bean steals the screen when he is on it. Bean's complex character and his performance in that movie is almost Shakespearean in tone: "My Brother, my Captain, my King. . ."

I initially had gone to see Troy for the visuals as well. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Pitt dominates the screen with his portrayal of Achilles. There is no over-the-top acting. Everyone turns in strong peformances. . .

I will definitely buy the DvD when it comes out.

Enjoy!

To bad the media would pan a War Movie for the sake of the Anti-War movement. As my Uncle who fought in Korea says, the best Anti-War statement is a War Movie. In the case of the Illiad, it is much more than a mere war movie, it is an exploration of the Greek psyche (The Olympian Ideals that drove Greek Culture), everything they beleived and the results of actions. Achilles dishonor and hubris by dragging the defeated and dead Hector behind his chariot is one of the obvious examples of what more is offered by one of the greatest stories ever written. Think of this, how many stories 3000+ years old are still known like the Illiad?

The Iliad was written around 800 bc, 500 years after the war.

1. The Epic of Gilgamesh
2. the Vedas
3. The Old Testament (King David, Solomon, etc)
4. the Upanishads

Ok just saw it, and I guess here is the best place to say it (my opinion).

If you liked Lord of the Rings, you should likely enjoy this film.

Because, just as Lord of the Rings might have altered a few details as concession to film, so too did Troy take artistic licence with a bit of history.

But I came out of the theater pleased and feeling like it was a good film.
Likely good enough for a purchase.
It is the equal of Gladiator (of course if you didn't like Gladiator, that won't help :) ). And I bought it gladly.

Not one usefully naked female, but they ensured the ladies get to oogle Brad Pitt several times :)
And yes, he did a good job of his role (acting not mooning the audience heheh).
Do your significant other a favour though, and let her enjoy the buns hehe. We guys see enough naked women in film normally.

If you go into the film set to pick apart the film, well I guess you have already succeeded in ruining the film.
Maybe I just like ancient setting epics. It's a refreshingh change from explosions and other munitions that are hopelessly incorrect in modern warfare films.

I can like Troy, but fat chance getting me to like Pearl Harbour.
I LIKE that my life bothers them,
Why should I be the only one bothered by it eh.

It's interesting that you compared Troy to Gladiator; I was thinking the same thing. [:)]

Petersen does take some license with the film (condensing the action from 10 years to 10 days, etc), but on the whole, I think it works movie-wise. . .

Considering the sheer scope of the film, Petersen did quite a job. It looks like the LoTR is rubbing off on other film-makers. . .

I hope "The Odyssey" is the next film that will be made.

Also, with today's computer graphics I'd like to see the movie "Midway" redone.

I encountered this image recently (can't recall where), but it was obviously cgi.

To be frank, if this image is any indication of the current potential enjoyed by games, then I have ceased to sympathise with film subjecting us to half baked attempts at historical accuracy hehe.

The image was I think an anime rpg game image. Never seen anything so incredible. Yes it was also a female hehe.

The idea that movies can blithefully subject us to screwed up scenes where the accuracy of the effect is anything but real is no longer acceptable.

Yep, I would like to see Midway redone.

But after what they did to Pearl Harbour, I have my doubts.

I think it might depend on who does Midway, and how serious they are about their subject.

Spielberg showed what can be done with Saving Private Ryan. Athough, I think the first 20, and last 45, minutes were the best parts of the movie.

Movies that are waaayy over-due:

1) Re-make of Midway

2) Battle of Iwo Jima

Both films would be representatve of the fighting in the Pacific both at sea (air battles) and on the ground (tough, attritional warfare).

Oliver Stone is currently filming a movie about Alexander the Great which will be released in the fall. It'll be interesting to see how he handles historical movies.

Hmmm.....maybe it's just my eyes and a fuzzy picture, but I sure hope the guy on the left isn't wearing a Roman helmet. At least the guy on the right appears to be wearing one that looks Greek.
