Questions for HTTR veterans

Post by Jaws »

Being new to HTTR I've only played a couple of short games so far: Advance on Loenen - Raid on Renkum - PI on the Popenberg. I'm trying to get the mechanics of the game down first.

Questions for play against the AI.

Which and/or are there any scenarios that are best played from one side first?

Should I always play the attacking/defending force first?

Are there any scenarios with surprises or are very tough so I can play “against” these? Please, no spoilers.

Are there any easier scenarios that I should up reinforcements or supply on to play against?

If a scenario is balanced and the going is hard, fine I'll play it that way, but I would rather play a tough fight first in a game instead of beating the AI handily and then going back to increase the AI handicap. Now I'm not an expert - never lose - wargamer (so keep this in mind) but any suggestion would be helpful.

Thanks

With HTTR the AI does fairly well on the attack or defense. So, you don't need to limit yourself to either side. Although I tend to think meeting engagements are less interesting and best left for H2H. They too easily subcumb to a strategy against the AI of grab the most defensible objectives first and ignore the others, attrit the AI while it tries to take these, and then towards the end when it is weak take the remaining objectives in the more open terrain. Also, meeting engagements give you too much advanced knowledge that you can seize certain locations with minimal resistance (if you move fast) by definition.

Definitely, play max order delays for the full experience. Myself, I've only played all the standard options and haven't tried them tweaked; not enough free time.

In my opinion, I found Mook Right Hook (Axis) one of the harder scenarios to get a decisive victory in. And I suspect that the most recent patch may have even made it harder for the Germans.

Enjoy.

Let us know how you do with standard options. I wouldn't expect you to beat the AI handily everytime out. I cannot even do that after a couple of years at this, but, of course, my wargaming skills aren't so good.

Most of the scenario writeups detail when it is best played as a certain side. They also indicate which if any side should be played first. They are accurate.

The three Neerpelt scenarios pretty much "grow" you into the game from "very" simple to lots of units.

A lot depends on the amount of time you can give to the game. The Arnhem historical campaign is quite hard playing as the Allies but does take a lot of time to play out since it is some ten days long.

In general start small and progress to the larger scenarios. As for surprises, try Terror of the Tyne Tees as the Allies. Most challenging...mmm...probably Mook Right Hook and the Campaigns. Have fun.[:)]
