At what stage did the thing freeze, while downloading, or whne trying to run from the download.

go to the microsoft website and look for updates, it will look for all updates that are needed for you machine.

98 SE is 98 Second Edition, first edition had a mass of bugs and some Y2k issues as well that second edition fixed.

How big is your hard drive? If you only have 1.7 gigs left, you might be bumping up against the maximum capacity when your other programs are loaded and operating.

Or the graphics driver is too old causing problems .
Your card should be a TNT so use a NVIDIA Detonator driver up to 2x.xx up to 30.82

I have a Matrox G400 16MB card and the game runs OK but sometimes there are some small display problems
